Childish Recommendations for Parents

April 17, 2006: Child.com has some recommendations for parents who want to preserve their family memories. On the plus side, the author recommends cameras, software and printers for three different levels of interest (starter, intermediate and advanced photographers). On the minus side, he doesn’t address what I have found to be the most important consideration for taking pictures of kids - shutter lag, and some of the recommendations are outdated (for example, he recommends Photoshop Elements 3, although version 4 has been out for some time now).

At a recent family party, I had three separate discussions with my sister, my mom, and my older daughter. They all wanted to know which was the “best” digital camera for them to purchase. Apparently they compared notes later that night and found that I had recommended a different camera for each of them. When they confronted me, they asked why I had suggested three different models when they had all wanted the best camera. I hadn’t been indecisive, I explained; rather, I had picked the camera that best fit each of their very distinct lifestyles and levels of expertise…
