Shoud This Be This Expensive?

April 25, 2006: I want to purchase a wireless remote shutter release for my Canon 20D. This doesn’t seem like an item that should break the bank.

But it turns out that the damn thing (the LC-5) lists for $680! Amazon.com has it for $525 and BH Photo wants $399! Even at that price - holy cow!

I can’t believe that the technology to build a remote contol for the shutter could possibly cost that much to produce. I’m accustomed to a big mark-up for accessories (the camera companies make more money from the accessories than from the cameras) but this is nuts!

Does anyone else think this is overpriced? Do you know a third party vendor for these? Or maybe you have an old one you want to unload cheap? Let me know.

It’s ridiculous to think that a remote could cost that much. Cheapo TV’s come with more sophisticated remotes at no extra chanrge. The high cost of the remote is indicative of the speciality of the item. Maybe 5% or less of all users (worldwide) would use or require such an item so understandabley the item is going to be priced high. I’d love one too! Oh well.

There are wireless triggers made by a Chinese company called Adidt. They can be found on ebay such as the item listed below :-
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7621896364
    Ebay item 7621896364

Probably one of the cheaper options around at US$105 delivered (in the USA).

Adidt also make wired shutter releases which are usually a fair bit cheaper than the Canon branded ones.

    Hope this helps
