Hey All,

I wasn't going to comment anymore on the "language thread", but since my name was mentioned (by DiAnna), I couldn't help but jump back into the frey.

When I wrote my first comment I was just trying to say "lighten up, guys", in a humorous way. I can't tell you how tired I am of all the morality policemen and women in this country and of hearing their self-righteous comments on everything from language to life-style to how we raise our children.

This podcast is free...you're not paying a penny to share in Michael and Scott's wisdom, opinion or humor. If you don't like what you hear, don't download it. But please, please spare us your negativity.

Michael...I just got the e-mail. The Nikon D80 is coming out in Sept of 2006. The body costs $999. Check it out on the Nikon Site. I just might go for this instead of the D200. That will give me two working cameras for a very good price.

Thanks Scott...This sounds perfect for my 80 year old mom, who did the computer thing for awhile but finds it all too overwhelming when things need to be upgraded or there are any technical problems. I'm on the west coast and she is in Massachusetts so I can't run over and help her. She pretty much just uses it to play cards and games on now. Never gets on line. This would be a great Chritmas present.

I hope your move went well and you are emptying those boxes...If you're like me there will be a few boxes that don't get emptied for quite some time, and that will be when you realize, did I really need this stuff? Oh the stuff we keep...it never ends and always more stuff to be had. Moving helps get rid of a lot of it though. Especially if you are paying by the pound.

Have a wonderful week-end in your new home with your family. Love to listen to you both.

Denise,

Alright, I get it about the "GD" word. I'm not the type to get particularly bothered about ANY words (I always tell my six-year old that the only "bad" words are ones that hurt another person's feelings), but we don't want to offend anyone, either. I promise I will watch it in the future.

Not only that, but a bolt of lightning would surely wreck havok on my podcasting equipment.

Michael doesn't have to worry because he always walks on the side of the angels.

Here's a section from Alex's book about the frame.

Shirley received a Ceiva Digital Photo Receiver (about $130, www.ceiva.com) for her 85th birthday. It consists of a 5-by-7--inch LCD screen, surrounded by a wood frame. It plugs into an electrical outlet for power and a regular phone line for receiving pictures. Then, like a TiVo digital video recorder, in the middle of every night the Ceiva "frame" dials in to check for photo updates. Any new photos are downloaded, replacing older ones. The Ceiva receiver can store 30 pictures at a time on its internal memory.

How does the frame know which pictures to download? It gets only pictures that you upload. Joyce uploads the photos she wants to share with her mom to Ceiva's Web site, and then every night the frame checks for and downloads any pictures. Anyone who knows the password can add pictures to Shirley's frame, which means she can get pictures from family members from all over the country.

"Every morning, Mom goes downstairs and checks the Ceiva first thing," Joyce said. "And she says, `Oh my! There are new pictures!' And she calls Joycie at 7 a.m."

This is an ingenious, effective and incredibly rewarding way to share your pictures with the non-technical family and friends in your life. No computer is required. No high-speed Internet connection is needed. Just an electrical outlet and a phone jack.

Scott and Michael....I was wondering if you could tell me the name of that item that your guest bought for his grandmother to view the uploaded photos at home while he was on his family trip. My mom would love this. It sounded like he was saying the word Ceva, but I'm not sure. On a different note...Michael, I got the 18-200mm Nikkor with Vibration sensitivity. Of course It came 30 minutes before I had to leave for work today. So I only got to play with it a little bit but there is always tomorrow. I liken it to a religious experience....heheh

I've been uploading lots of photos to iStockphoto. I've even sold 7 shots of Big Sur. Something important I have learned is that the jpegs deteriorate significantly after opening the files even 4 times and they have compression issues and are being rejected. I have now started turning them into tiffs to work on in photoshop and just as I am about to upload them I change them into jpegs. Hopefully with my new lens and the tiffs I will have more successs. You have to have 500 accepted uploads to go exclusive. I'm working on it.

I have to admit the GD's were like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. I blame it on Catholic school and the fear of that bolt of lightening, just waiting for us to do or say something wrong. I think I would have taken the F bomb better. I love your show and the way it's delivered. The two of you are a perfect compliment to each other.

I haven't missed one of your shows since the beginning. What's up with these last two shows and the increase in the use of very offensive language? I've overlooked other things that I didn't particularly like -- like the time you taped the show drunk -- but this I personally won't be able to overlook. I understand that I'm not that valuable, but if it continues you'll have to find another subscriber to replace me. Maybe Mary and Allen can help you look. :)

Hi Michael & Scott,

I just discovered your podcast series last week, and I LOVE it! I'm catching up by alternating between the newest and oldest casts, but am enjoying and learning something from every one.

Although your well-researched subject matter and great interviews are the highlights of your show, your god damned human touch is what keeps it entertaining, real, and non-intimidating for the rest of us.

If either of you are ever looking for a warm winter retreat, check out my small town of Cape Canaveral. We like "two daddy" families and neophiliacs ;-). And Mary and her fucking agenda would fit in well, too.

Hugs and thanks again for a great show!

Oh, the Digital Photography Show's cherry has been popped... The first 'F' bomb has been dropped, and it was Mary that did it, not that god damned potty-mouth Scott. This event will go down in the TDPS history book :)

Hey Scott and Michael,

I really enjoyed your last show (actually I enjoy all your shows). I especially enjoyed Michael's impressions of the professional photog he followed around at his company's function. Scott's interview with Alex Goldfayn was great. You guys are great...and fucking nice guys, to boot...ooops.

Hey Jeff,

I'm not going to "let you have it." You are more than entitled to have your opinion. (Although it does occur to me that you might be trying to provoke me into using Allen's infamous "F" word.) I even agree with you that Michael rules. He fills me in on the blanks all the time.

I also agree that the people we've had on the show have been great. I really enjoy having the "experts" on - I learn a lot from them.

But I like hearing from the more regular folks and other enthusiasts, too. We want to have more digital photography fans on as we go along.

I didn't remember the rant to which you allude, so I went back and listened. I actually did
have a clue about what Lightroom does -the point of my criticism was that Adobe should have done a better job of explaining their own product. Listening again, I think that criticism was fair.

You're right - I was "pissed" that their description was so obscure. But the whole point of our show is talking about the delights - as well as the frustrations - of being a hobbyist. This was one of those occasions that I was frustrated. What's wroing with sharing that?

And how great was Alex Goldfayn? I really want to have him back on.

Anyway, Jeff, thanks for listening and for taking the time to let us know what's on your mind. When you start the Michael Stein fan club, I'll be your first member.

I really don't have a problem with the GD's except to me it did sound scripted. It didn't fit the occasion.

Also It seemed like Scott had a real problem with Lightroom. In fact he sounded a little pissed. Why don't you try investigating what you're going to talk about. Or at the very least shut up if you don't know what you're talking about. Michael had used it and was telling you about it and you just totally ignored him and went on your rant. It's amazing to me someone can be as connected as you say you are and not know what Lightroom is.
I realize you guys don't profess to be experts on all the stuff you talk about and that's fine but this is pushing it a little. You've got a show about Digital Photography and you didn’t have a clue.
Also you just totally blew off the comments that Michael had Pretty god damn rude if you ask me, at least he knew what it was and had bothered to use it before he commented on it.

The people you've had on the show have been great. It's nice to listen to these folks and realize they are just regular people like the rest of us. Please keep the interviews going!

Ok Scott, now you can let me have it, but I still think I'm god damn right. Michael you're the voice of reason. Keep on filling in the blanks for us.

I'm back online, and very interested reading everyones comments.

Steve, so far, in my first day, I haven't noticed any faster experience with web browsing, although I haven't attempted any downloads yet.

Tlementry and Allen thanks for weighing in on my potty mouth. I will try to keep things cleaner in the future, although, as my friend Joanne Miller used to say, my tongue is on my lung." Meaning , I tend to say what I feel inside. Which means, Allen, even the "F" bomb might escape one day. Although I bet Michael would bleep it out in post production.

Meanwhile, I'm just glad someone thinks I have "professionalism," diminished or otherwise.

Scott,

While I appreciate and respect Tlemetry's opinion ... I must say that it seems that you are loostening up a bit and letting a few God Damns (and other PG rated terms) slip out ... for me it makes the dialog on your end seem a little more real or natural and less scripted ... I feel like I'm sitting here listening to a friend talk to me, not a broadcaster talking at me... and I like that.

While I don't think that you really need to drop any "F" bombs on us, I would hope that if you review a product and it's a god damn piece of crap, you'll say so :)

Do what you want buddy, it's your podcast. And I don't think that you've got any 5 year old digital photographers listening, so loosten up and have fun.

Steve said "Also if anyone can point me in the direction of the Apple software mentioned by Alex that allows you to run Windows/Mac simultaneously on Intel Macs please reply!"

Steve,

I'm quite sure that he was talking about Parallels. I've seen links to it from apple.com .... of course it's not an Apple product, but it seems that Apple is encouraging you to use it (maybe they plan on buying it someday).

I run Parallels on my MacBookPro and I am VERY happy with it. Be SURE to get 2GB of RAM if you plan to run Parallels and Windows XP.

Just a simple suggestion, which by no means intend to offend you. However, If I were you I would watch the use of 'god damn' on the air as it diminishes your professionalism to your listeners. I dont recall catching the use of this on previous episodes but today I caught it 3-4 times.

I know your human and the 'off the cuff' style you have is one of the things I love about listening to your show. I love the interviews with the pros. Its very inspiring to hear how they do the things they do.

Michael,

The #s refer to the speeds, downstream/upstream, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). As a reference point, my cable modem at home is 4 Mbps/384 Kbps which is pretty good but definitely a far cry from the 50 Mbps/5 Mbps that the high end Fiber provides.

Verizon is putting a lot into their Fiber network and expansion is happening all the time. Definitely sign up to be notified when it's available on their website.

Also if anyone can point me in the direction of the Apple software mentioned by Alex that allows you to run Windows/Mac simultaneously on Intel Macs please reply! As far as I know the only solution for that is a $70 piece of software by Parallels. I do use Boot Camp which is wonderful but I'd love to be able to save time by not restarting into Windows.

Hello Michael and Scott. I heard your review of Adobe's Lightroom. I've listened to episode one and I had to comment on this.

I tried lightroom for the PC when it was released and I though it would be the best photo editing workflow software. I was also surpised at small ~8MB file size too. I have an AMD Athlon XP-M 1.6 GHz, 512MB RAM laptop, 32MB shared graphics. Lightroom was sluggish for me. It's definately not worth downloading and trying if the computer's specs are any less or maybe even a little better than my said specs. I'll assume that a 2.0 GHz processor, +512MB RAM, and a dedicated graphics cards would be sufficient.

I'll have to disagree with you Michael, I would prefer Aperture over lightroom. I do like MAC's better even though I do have a PC only.

If anyone does have a not so high performing computer, stick with something like Google's Picasa, I love it, it's a nice basic editing software and photo library organizer.

Keep podcasting and thanks for podcasting.

Steve,

It hurt my ears when we were taping. I've got the lowest speed of Verizon DSL for home. I've been too lazy to upgrade to the somewhat higher speed and all it requires is a phone call and one year agreement. For most of my needs, I don't need the big bandwidth. It would come in handy when I perform those OS X updates though (they can be quite large). Faster internet will certainly open up opportunities for online storage solutions (and a whole lot more like the HDTV).

When I checked out the Verizon site I was impressed with the speed. I'm not expecting it to be in my area for quite a while. I am curious, what do those tier numbers mean?

I love the show. I've been listening since the first episode but your little talk about the speed of FIOS made me cringe!

I work within Verizon's Engineering Department for Copper/Fiber Networks and I'm also a CS Major so the talk about a million millibytes hurt my ears lol. You reminded me of my local sales reps @ Circuit City/Best Buy! In short, "it's 3-12x faster than cable modems" is probably the best way to describe the speeds w/o getting too technical.

FIOS also is able to transfer HDTV to homes along with Internet and Phone Service. So if you might want to compare their selection w/ the local cable company's.

Another note, Verizon is upgrading their speed tiers! The 5/2 tier is bumped up to 10/2, the 15/2 tier is now 20/5 and the top tier is 50/5 up from 30/5. These speed increases will be avilable shortly for residential customers in certain areas. And keep a watch because there are even further speed increases coming in the future.

I'm in the Philly suburbs and I'm still waiting for my own FIOS, so be sure to let us know how you like it once you're situated w/ the move. Everyone I've spoken with says it's amazingly fast.

I hope all goes well with the relocation and I look forward to the next podcast!
