September 6, 2006: Welcome to the exciting eighteenth episode of The Digital Photography Show!
Today, it’s just me and Michael again, as we catch up on the latest news and talk about three sexy new DLSRs - Canon’s New Digital Rebel 400D, Nikon’s D80 and Panasonic’s Lumix L1. Each is pretty hot in its own right. Listen while we discuss and drool. Then it’s onto the main course: a discussion of our favorite websites. Unfortunately, our list was so long, that we didn’t get to talk about everyone of these.
Next week, we’ll be having an interview with Andrew Erlichson, CEO of Phanfare, a new photo sharing and video sharing web service. In anticipation of the upcoming interview, Michael and I have been using Phanfare for the past few days, and I think it’s fair to say that our initial impressions are very favorable. Try it out for yourself, and next week tune in to find out how you can win a free year’s membership on the site. Here is Michael’s stein.phanfare.com site with a couple test albums.
Web sites we discussed on today’s show:
This list from our listener Julian included not only websites, but a nice summary of what makes them worthwhile:
www.martinbailleyphotography.com - the home of Martin Bailey Photographer and Podcaster - good and occasionally active forum community.
www.wetducklounge.com - the website of Sondra Mantle - Nova Scotia based photographer, writer and poet - check out the old galleries some of the images a re stunning in their simplicity.
www.lomography.com - home of the lomographic movement - originators of “shoot from the hip” - cool photos from cheap cameras
http://share.studio.adobe.com - cool PS action, templates etc - I have a PS CS2 cross processing action from here to die for!
www.ffordes.co.uk - Premier UK stockists of class used equipment and possibly the most beautiful camera shop in the world situated in an old converted church in the far North of Scotland - packed with vintage Leica equipment!
www.samoamax.com - digital artist, photogrpaher and all round cool guy - I came across him on:
www.shuttercity.com - an online gallery and critique site which has some cool images but ended up with too much backslapping and too little criticism to be useful. Stopped posting here when I became disillusioned with it all, but keep an eye on it as there are a few good photographer who still post here - check out Kia Moss.
www.julianfoley.co.uk - well you did say if it was appropriate push your own site!!! If you like the Lomo thing, I have been working on my own Lomo style images which can be found in the colour lomo section of the site! (Note from Scott Julians images are breathtaking. Be sure to check them out. Although, I had to Google Lomo to see what Julian was talking about. I’m still not sure I get it, but sounds interesting. Julian, maybe you want to come on the show and enlighten us?)

I have been playing with FotoMagico since you recommended it. I love it. I am sure I went a little overboard with the pan and zoom, but I was just trying to see what it could do and the air show was a good vehicle for taking advantage of those dramatic features. Thanks for mentioning that product.
Michael…I thought your pan and zooms, rotations and transitions were terrific…it sure is more dramatic than viewing still pictures. I love the program too…I’m doing a slideshow of our family reunion. I’m currently trying to decide between “We are Family” and “I Will Survive” as the background music.
Scott…I’m not sure about the crack, but if there’s any residual alcohol in the flask, I wouldn’t light it…although it might be the most exciting thing to ever happen at a PTA meeting.
I took the liberty of tagging all of the favorites in del.icio.us, so everyone can have access, and in addition whenever in the future anyone wants to add a favorite, one can subscribe to the list via RSS.
Thanks, Allen. Like Mary, I’m working on a family reunion slide show. I’m now trying my best to do subtle, but cool pan/zoom/rotations. I’ll be distributing it to the entire family so I don’t want to make them sick.
I wanted to add one of my favorite photo sites … this one is not a “How to” site, it’s a site loaded with this photographer’s photos. I spend hours just looking at all his photos.
His name is Nir Oren, he lives in Tel Aviv Israel.
Kinda like myself, Nir has varried insterests … he takes photojournalistic shots, travel snaps, sports shots, wildlife shots, street photos, festivals, abstracts and lots of people shots (beautiful males and females).
1. For color management and all things dealing with printing, there is no better teacher than Mike Chaney (the creator and developer of the best printing software I have used, called Qimage). His column is here: http://www.steves-digicams.com/techcorner/tc_index.html
I think he would be an excellent guest on your show. Although I have never heard him talk, I have seen his email responses to folks on his forum and he seems great. He explains color management in a way that I can understand. And that is a feat!
2. For Photoshop Elements users (we are lonely sometimes with all the focus on Photoshop), the best site on the planet is http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/
The forums are incredible. The nicest people you can imagine and they get you the right answer almost as soon as you post a question. The video tutorials are so good that I subscribed a year ago and just re-upped my subscription for another 2 years.
3. I know there are a plethora of photography forums out there. I am a Nikon person, so this is for Nikon photographers. The best, in my opinion and this comes after visiting darn near all of them, is http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/index.php
Great group of people and incredible photographers. The focus is more on friendship and encouragement in terms of its tone, but it is jammed-pack with technical know-how and tutorials as well.
This is a great site. Especially for new Nikon users. He’s got great tutorials on how to setup your new Nikon. As well as great product comparisons and news.

Good show Guys…and thanks for all the recommendations in your show notes.
One of the sites I like is http://www.thedigitalstory.com. You might consider interviewing Derrick Story, the author of that site.
Michael, I really liked your “Air Show” slideshow.
Scott, I’m glad my PTA days are over. I used to get nuts about five minutes into the meeting. Take a flask.

Can you fit crack into a flask?
