Magic: Make Your DSLR into a Live View Digicam

September 12, 2006: Michael wasn’t too thrilled with this accessory, but I think it’s super-cool. The Zigview S2 Digital Angle Finder attaches to your DSLR’s viewfinder, and somehow pumps the image out to a detachable LCD screen, giving you a live 2.5 inch view. It also has TV output, an interval timer, and a motion sensor, although that stuff doesn’t have me as primed as its primary purpose.

Since it detaches, you can put the camera on a tripod and take your picture from any angle. That would be great for macros, or for taking pictures where you don’t want to be stuck behind your camera. You could interact with your models, make faces for the kids, or fine tune your still lifes.

Oh, you can even get a shutter release, so you can take the picture from the LCD screen in your hand. That’s crazy cool!

Come on, tell me you don’t want it.

I like everything about the Zigview but the price - which, according to Engadget, is $466 US. (Actually, I don’t really like the name, either. “Zigview?” What’s up with that?) Yikes! That’s half an entry-level DSLR right there!

I can certainly see where there would be times when that would be a cool accessory (especially the TV out to a plasma display!!!) … but as you say, at 1/2 the price of a Digital Rebel (actually a little over 1/2) it’s a pretty expensive accessory.

You can buy a pretty damn nice pice of glass for that price and just put your face up the viewfinder.

I recently purchased the Zigview SC-V100R and am very pleased with its operation. However, you mentioned that you can hold the Zigview in your hand and see what the viewfinder is seeing. Since the Zigview uses a small video camera to capture your viewfinder it has to be attached to your camera to work correctly, not hand held.

    Thanks for a great show.

Chris, if you look at the picture on this post of the Zigview S2 Digital Angle Finder, you’ll see that the new version is detachable. Which is to say that part of the Zigview does stay attached to the back of the camera, but there is a LCD screen you can hold in your hand.

Here is is as described on Engadget: “Zigview just made it a bit easier for you digital SLR owners to frame your shots with their new and improved Zigview S2 Digital Angle Finder. Like last year’s offering, the S2 attaches to your DSLR’s viewfinder to display a live video feed on that large, 2.5-inch “high-resolution” LCD. Thing is, this screen can be detached from the main unit allowing you to view the subject and fire the shutter from any angle up to 10-meters away (via extension cable). That screen also includes a TV-out, 9 area TTL motion sensor, and interval timer for all sorts of clandestine possibilities.”

    Pretty cool, huh?

You can detach the LCD from the camera via a remote video transceiver with the S2, a feature not found with the Zigview-R. You can see pictures of this and order online at http://www.climaxdigital.com

    Hope this helps!
