The Digital Photography Show #25: Win an Expodisc and Find Your (White) Balance in Life
The Digital Photography Show #25: Win an Expodisc and Find Your (White) Balance in Life (19MB, 56mins)
November 01, 2006: Welcome to the terrifying twenty fifth episode of The Digital Photography Show! Why is it terrifying? Because Michael and I taped it so close to Halloween! Boo!
Today’s guests are two guys from ExpoImaging, makers of the Expodisc. On a recent episode of this show, guest Scott Kelby raved about the Expodisc, saying that it made perfect white balance as easy as…insert metaphor here (I’m too tired from late night trick-or-treating to think of anything but raiding my son’s candy jar for another package of MnMs).
The boys of Expodisc were nice enough to give away a copy of their product to one of our listeners. Check out the show for what you need to send us via email at TheDigitalPhotographyShow@gmail.com by November 12, 2006.
Michael and I also talk about our upcoming trip to PhotoPlus Expo, the huge photography exposition where we’re going to make friends, book guests, secure advertising deals and, very possibly, learn the secrets of levitation. Hey, you gotta aim high.
And, of course, we’re going to try and grab a bunch of free stuff for you, too.
Thanks for joining us and thanks to Alien Skin for the sponsorship! And don’t forget about their 50% off offer on Exposure for listeners of this show. Call 1-888-921-7546 and tell them The Digital Photography Show sent you. Please leave you comments in the forum or email us at thedigitalphotographyshow@gmail.com.
Who’s the best audience in the world? You are! Go make great pictures.

Scott and Michael,
Another excellent interview. I hope I win an expo disc, but if not, I think I’ll purchase one. Like Michael, I have trouble taking pictures of the kids with competing indoor lights. Anything that helps us attain that “great picture”, count me in.
Hope you have a fun, educational and uneventful trip to the Big Apple and I look forward to hearing all about it.

…at least the parts you’re able to talk about!!!
I’m trusting Michael will keep Scott out of trouble.

I think they both need to keep each other out of trouble!
Can you imagine the damage to their bank balance when they are let loose walking around the expo :-)
Keep up the good work guys, I look forward to your informative ramblings every week. Are you able to grab an interview with the fantastic Joe Cornish sometime? His landscape work is out of this world.

GREAT SHOW!!! I’m learning so much about photography from you guys.
Hope I win the expo disc as well but I’ll probably buy it just like I did Scott Shelbys book after listening to the interview on your show.
Keep up the good work.

Have a safe trip to my old home town! Maybe you could do some on the spot interviews for the next podcast?

I hope you guys have a great time at the show. I can’t wait to hear what you come back with.

I have stayed at the North Bergen Days Inn. Make sure you get back before the shuttles stop running. It’s about a $60 4-mile cab ride otherwise (If you can find a cabbie that will cross state lines in the first place. :-)
Have fun!

The perfect photo opportunity … ruined! (but I’m glad)
Today on my way home from work I saw that the sun had just set below the mountains to the west (I live near Palm Springs California) and it was making a beautiful red/orange/yellow glow behind the mountians with the wind farms in the foreground. I pulled off the freeway and set up my tripod and got my camera out and was just about ready to snap the perfect shot at the magic moment. ,,,then my damn cel phone rang.
It was Scott Sherman calling from New York. Scott and I talked for about 40 minutes and had a great time discussing all sorts of topics including some upcoming podcast stuff. It was a treat to spend that time with him and even though I missed a great photo I had a great conversation with a great friend which is worth more than any photo. … hmm, unless I could have sold that photo for hundreds of dollars … Damn you Scott!!!!!!
Just kidding. Great talking to you today.

Another great show! It left me with a practical “how to” question: if there are multiple light sources in one room, and you are supposed to point the expodisc at “the light source,” which of the several light sources do you choose to point the expodisc toward? The dominant one?

Landya,
I believe in such a situation, one would stand at the location of the subject and aim towards where the camera will be when you shoot the image.

Michael:
Thanks for your quick reply, especially considering your recent trip. I am on the verge of buying one of these, but I am still a little baffled at the basics.
So, in my question above, is this one instance when you do not aim at the light source? Because what if the area from where you are taking the photo is very dark and the main light source is coming from a big window off to the side? You go stand where the subject is, turn and aim the expodisc at the dark area from where you would be taking the photo — not at the window light?

Wonderful Landya
Do you have a high speed internet connection? If so, my advice to you - and to anyone else interested in an Expodisc - is to check out the instructional video which they buried on their website here: http://www.expoimaging.net/support/videotutorials.php.

You guys are costing me too much money.
I bought the expo disc and love it. Very easy to use and great results (watch the video disc that comes with it).
I bought the alien skin exposure; can’t live without it.
Please stop giving good advice, I have bills to pay.

Landya, thanks for asking that question, I had the same one. I’ll be watching the video to figure out what’s the best way to use the ExpoDisc. Frankly, I’ve heard about this thing for a couple of years now, but always was a little unsure about using it so I never went so far as to actually buy it. Thanks to this podcast, I’ll probably get one too!
