Landya, thanks for asking that question, I had the same one. I’ll be watching the video to figure out what’s the best way to use the ExpoDisc. Frankly, I’ve heard about this thing for a couple of years now, but always was a little unsure about using it so I never went so far as to actually buy it. Thanks to this podcast, I’ll probably get one too!

You guys are costing me too much money.

I bought the expo disc and love it. Very easy to use and great results (watch the video disc that comes with it).

I bought the alien skin exposure; can’t live without it.

Please stop giving good advice, I have bills to pay.

Do you have a high speed internet connection? If so, my advice to you - and to anyone else interested in an Expodisc - is to check out the instructional video which they buried on their website here: http://www.expoimaging.net/support/videotutorials.php.

Thanks for your quick reply, especially considering your recent trip. I am on the verge of buying one of these, but I am still a little baffled at the basics.

So, in my question above, is this one instance when you do not aim at the light source? Because what if the area from where you are taking the photo is very dark and the main light source is coming from a big window off to the side? You go stand where the subject is, turn and aim the expodisc at the dark area from where you would be taking the photo — not at the window light?

I believe in such a situation, one would stand at the location of the subject and aim towards where the camera will be when you shoot the image.

Another great show! It left me with a practical “how to” question: if there are multiple light sources in one room, and you are supposed to point the expodisc at “the light source,” which of the several light sources do you choose to point the expodisc toward? The dominant one?

The perfect photo opportunity … ruined! (but I’m glad)

Today on my way home from work I saw that the sun had just set below the mountains to the west (I live near Palm Springs California) and it was making a beautiful red/orange/yellow glow behind the mountians with the wind farms in the foreground. I pulled off the freeway and set up my tripod and got my camera out and was just about ready to snap the perfect shot at the magic moment. ,,,then my damn cel phone rang.

It was Scott Sherman calling from New York. Scott and I talked for about 40 minutes and had a great time discussing all sorts of topics including some upcoming podcast stuff. It was a treat to spend that time with him and even though I missed a great photo I had a great conversation with a great friend which is worth more than any photo. … hmm, unless I could have sold that photo for hundreds of dollars … Damn you Scott!!!!!!
Just kidding. Great talking to you today.

I have stayed at the North Bergen Days Inn. Make sure you get back before the shuttles stop running. It’s about a $60 4-mile cab ride otherwise (If you can find a cabbie that will cross state lines in the first place. :-)

Scott and Michael,

Another excellent interview. I hope I win an expo disc, but if not, I think I’ll purchase one. Like Michael, I have trouble taking pictures of the kids with competing indoor lights. Anything that helps us attain that “great picture”, count me in.

Hope you have a fun, educational and uneventful trip to the Big Apple and I look forward to hearing all about it.
