The Digital Photography Show #26: We Bring News and Discounts from PhotoPlus Expo! (20MB, 58mins)
November 08, 2006: Welcome to the thrilling twenty sixth episode of The Digital Photography Show. It’s thrilling because we’re coming to you live (well, we were live then) from the floor of PhotoPlus Expo, one of the world’s largest photography trade shows.
Michael and I met so many great people, saw so many cool products, and got so many interesting interviews that the next two episodes of The Digital Photography Show will feature news, interviews and products from the Expo.
On this week’s show, we talk with Dave Etchells, creator of the influential and informative website imaging-resource.com. Michael and I were like wide-eyed kids at the Expo, but Dave is a seasoned pro who’s been working this field for many years. He gives us his expert take on what was hot and what was not at this year’s show.
One of the cool things about attending a trade show is that many of the manufacturers offer show-only discounts. Well, Michael and I felt that wasn’t fair to our listeners – why should you be left out in the cold? So, we pestered and begged and we are thrilled to announce that several of the companies at the Expo agreed to extend their show-only discounts to you, our listeners.
In fact, the first company will be featuring, ACD Systems, is actually offering you a better discount than that given to attendees of the Expo. Listen to the interview with James Latham from ACD about their wide range of products, and the terrific deal they have for you. (Just to clear, Michael and I get no money if you buy their programs. We’re just excited to be able to share the joy with you.)
We also have a brief interview with Amedeo Rosa from our first sponsor, Alien Skin. In addition to the incredible 50% discount they’re offering our listeners on Exposure, Amedeo also offers to extend the Expo discount on some of their other products to you available to you, too. If you’re interested in buying any Alien Skin products, you better get them quickly before the company goes bankrupt from all the discounts they’re giving our listeners. Alien Skin rocks!
One company we didn’t interview on the floor was Joby. But they were nice enough to just hand over three of their Gorillapods for our listeners. The Gorillapod is a cute little tabletop tripod that has articulated legs that allow you to wrap them around something or use them on an uneven surface. The Gorillapods they gave me are the kind for compact digital cameras that have a max weight of 275g (9.7oz.). So, if you have a little camera and a need for a small and flexible tripod, listen to the show and send us a line at TheDigitalPhotographyShow@gmail.com for your chance to win.
Oh, and at the end of the show, two very special guests say “hi†to you.
Thanks as always for tuning and in and for the incredibly kind feedback you’ve been sending us and the great reviews of the show you’ve been leaving on iTunes. I apolologize for the fact that the show’s sound is a little rough at times, but this was our first attempt at on-location taping. I hope the content makes up for the spotty sound quality. Will you let us know what you think?
Scott

As always, Michael doesnt say a word. I sometimes wonder if you need an extra hand to say “Now for the Theme music”.

Entertaining show, guys!
Michael, could you compare ACDSee to IPhoto. After reviewing their website, I can’t see any benefit to their program when compared to IPhoto. What am I missing?
November 11th, 2006 at 8:29 am
Hi Mary,
I believe ACDSee is a Windows Only product. I intend to try it out on my Windows machine to familiarize myself with it. It seems like a nice program. I know Scott likes it.
Personally, I am not in love with iPhoto or any other program which insists on managing my photos for me. When you import photos into iPhoto, it actually creates copies of your originals and puts them in to a directory you can’t easily access. I am also not wild about managing imports by “rolls.” It is just not intuitive to me.
The only thing I used iPhoto for was their slide shows, but ever since a great friend introduced me to FotoMagico, I have not touched iPhoto since.

Really enjoyed Dave Etchells. I just signed up for his newsletter.

Dave was great in person, too. What a nice guy!

Hi,
Great show…how did you like the guys at Crumpler, if they are like their website I expect it was quite an experience, they do make very nice bags though!!
Just another thing, have you thought of joining the Photocast Network (http://www.photocastnetwork.com)?

Hi Tom,
Their booth at the show was quite funky. Lots of corrugated cardboard. I’ve been writing back and forth with them this week and invited them on the show. Stay tuned…

why is it so hard for me to download your podcast? I can’t find a link to an MP3 file. I listen at work, not at home so I need to download the file and take it to work. It seems I am prevented from being a listener and will have to look elselwhere for a photographic podcast.

Alan,
Right click on “listen here” and you can save the file as an mp3 on your hard drive.

Hi
Great show Guys I really enjoy listening to it.
I do have one question though. All these discounts that your guests are offering to listeners, are they all open to us international listeners. I notice that to take advantage of some of them you need to phone a number in the States. This is something that I am not going to do from the UK because the cost of the phone call would probably out weigh the discount I’m going to get! Is there another way I can take advantage of some of the great offers that are available to us listeners of TDPS?
Thanks again for a great show!!
Derek.

Derek, I can think of two options for our overseas friends:
1) You could email the companies and see if you can make the purchase online using the code or
2) You can do what I do for international calls and use SkypeOut service through Skype, a VOIP service. The international calls cost 10 cents/minute American using their service.
