The Digital Photography Show #32: Scott Kelby on Photoshop CS3! And win his book! (23.5MB, 65 mins)
December 28, 2006: Welcome to the thunderous thirty second episode of The Digital Photography Show!
Today we talk to Scott Kelby, one of the world’s leading experts on Photoshop about CS3, the latest and greatest (but still in beta-est) version of the King of Image Editors.
We also cover the latest news and events, including a possible merger of two photo giants (well, kinda) and firmware updates for Canon and Pentax cameras.
I even disclose what Michael got me for Christmas.
If you want to enter this week’s contest, send us your answer the questions “what are the first four words in Scott’s note” on this page. We will pick a winner on January 15, 2007.
Also be sure to check out the Phanfare photo album of your entries into our Holiday Macro Contest here.
You can find out more about Scott Kelby’s Lightroom book here.
And according to this, neither Michael nor I was correct about the meaning of Boxing Day. I hate being wrong, but at least Michael wasn’t right.
Please keep those comments and emails coming! Write us at TheDigitalPhotographyShow@gmail.com. And have a great 2007!
Here’s the Richard Simmons video I mentioned on the show (link).

Great show. Anytime you have Kelby on the show it’s going to be a great show.
I saw that Richard Simmons clip a month ago or so … but it’s funny as hell every time I see it.

When there’s no exciting news that week you can alway play the “Kelby card” for an interesting show!;)
So… if you buy his eBook on Lightroom will you get a copy of the final hard copy when it’s completed?….or at the very least a substantial discount??…hint hint.
I’m also interested in when Kelby’s PS Elements v5 book will be available. As much as I really WANT to buy the full Photoshop, so far I’m getting along with Lightroom and PS Elements.

Despite the looks of this thread, there is no policy that only people with the first name of Alan (or Allen) will be allowed to post.
Allen - thanks for the nice words. Yes, this Simmons clip is a classic. Letterman is a master of the deadpan.
Alan - I looked to see if the Peachpit site made mention of a discount on the hard copy, but they don’t. But who needs the hard copy anyway? It’s 2006. Download an ebook and save a tree!

Hi Scott and Michael,
After listening to Show #32, I Googled “boxing day” (which I never heard of) and found this site:
http://homepages.tesco.net/~derek.berger/holidays/boxingday.html
The day after Chrismas, December 26, was the day the rich folk gave boxes (gifts) to the tradespeople. I guess doing it after Christmas instead of before was a way of reminding them who worked for whom.
I really enjoy your show and look forward to it every week. Please keep it coming!
Regards,
Ken Jones

Sorry to back-step a few shows, but I have a Wacom question. I received a gift certificate to B&H ($150) for Christmas. I want to buy a Wacom tablet. I can get a graphire 4×5 for only $99; or a graphire 6×8 for $199.
I also want to buy the full version of Snap Art as well. So I have figured that into my thinking. (This podcast is dangerous for the wallet.)
I have been reading that the Graphire is very nice. Some even prefer the smaller work size (4×5) because it fits better on the desk.
I am no artist but I do enjoy playing with my photos. Anyone able to comment on the differences between the graphire and intuos from a practical perspective (i.e., tried both)?
I listened to the podcast, so I know the Intuos is more pressure sensitive, but I wonder if I need to spend $300 for that. I am open to it though . . . .
Anyone?

Hi,
Just thought I’d share this Adobe Lightroom tip which I found. I am running Lightroom on a Windows 1.8 Ghz laptop with 512Mb RAM and no dedicated graphics card so you can see how Lightroom would be a struggule for it. However, after finding this option, Lightroom is now running very efficiently!
All you have to do is tick for box which says “Render Standard Previews” instead of “Use Embedded and Sidecar Previews” when importing your photos. I presume the loading of embedded previews is what made it go so slow for me in the beginning.
Hope this is of help to some of you,
Tom.
P.S. Does anyone have any ideas on how much Lightroom is going to cost as I am enjoying using it but if it’s out of my budget, I dont want to become too dependent on it!

Tom,
A photographer with a budget? I’ve never heard of such a thing.
… but seriously, I’m sure it will not cost any more than it’s competitor, Apple’s Aperture, which is $299.00
You can almost be sure that it will be part of the upcoming Creative Suite 3 (CS3) or some version of it.
If you really do have a tight budget make sure you look into acedemic versions … identical in every way except price. You just need to be a student, teacher or know one that can get it for you. Check out journeyed.com

After much detailed research, I just ordered the 4×6 Intuos 3. That way my tablet is not too big for my desk (a complaint I read about frequently) and yet it is a full featured tablet, missing only some of the buttons and surface area of the more expensive 6×8 size.
I hope I get the hang of this! I think if I can get the hang of it, I will like it.
p.s. The smaller size was also > $70 less than the 6×8. Leaves me some money for SnapArt.

Hi,
Just received the Monster Pod that I heard about on your podcast. It held my Sony H1 on my wall for well over two minutes. I think it will be great for my walking field trips, it easily fits in my rather small camera bag.
Keep it up guys.
It was a real thrill to see that my pic is one of the finalists in your macro contest.
Keep up the great job.

Tom: If you’re worried about cost, checkout DXO. It does the things Lightroom does, and unless you’re using a pro level SLR, won’t cost you more than $149 (even less if the discount from this show (DPSSHOW) is still available.
It has a free trial, so well worth downloading and taking a look at. Without doing anything other than processing, it does a very nice job with the photos. Has all the import into project, organize/select, tweak, process features of Lightroom, although I don’t know what it has in the way of printing help since that isn’t a concern for me. I always send my photos off to be printed. Can’t be bothered with the hassle/expense of printing at home…
