The Digital Photography Show #34: Rick Sammon Critiques Your Photos! (23MB, 105mins)

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

January, 11, 2007: Welcome to the Thumping Thirty-Fourth episode of The Digital Photography Show!

Today we have an unbelievably good show (if we do say so ourselves). But the credit doesn’t go to us – it goes to our Special Guest Star Rick Sammon, who helps us critique the finalists, which you can see here, for our first ever Digital Photography Show Contest!

It’s fascinating and illuminating to hear a really good photographer discuss a photograph, and Rick is about as good as they get. Listen as he tells us what makes our finalists so great, but also where they could improve. It’s really instructional and you will think about your photos in a whole new way after you hear how a pro like Rick looks at a picture.

We also talk about our newest advertiser, DxO Optics Pro (DOP). Michael and I are absolutely committed to only bringing on advertisers for products we love, and DOP is very lovable. If you don’t want to spend hours in Photoshop perfecting every picture, we don’t think there’s a better “one button” fix than DOP.

Of course, while all you have to do is press “process,” DOP is doing a heck of a lot of work behind the scenes. DOP knows the built-in problems with every major camera and lens, and it automatically fixes them for you. You can follow along on the screen as it repairs white balance, lighting, noise, chromatic aberrations, lens softness, vignetting and more. It is truly remarkable. I’ve never seen a program “get it right” as often as DOP does.

You have got to download the free trial. You’ll thank us for it.

You’ll also thank us for the discount DxO is offering only to listeners of this show. Try the program for free, and when you’re ready to buy, use the code DPSSHOW (all caps) on the DxO online store and you’ll get an immediate 20% off.

This offer is limited to the first 500 orders, so take your time evaluating the free trial, but don’t take forever.

As always, special thank yous to our sponsor, Alien Skin, and to our newest advertiser, DxO Labs. These are companies we are incredibly proud to feature on the show. Check out their free trial downloads today!

Thanks to everyone for listening and joining us here on the blog. We tried something new with this episode. Did you like today’s show? Was it helpful hearing online critiques? Would you like more contests?

    Michael, Scott and Rick,
Thank you for your feedback on my contest photo. It was exciting to hear people discuss a photo of mine and to get honest feedback. I was very pleasently surprised by how positive that feedback was. It was a real thrill to have Rick select my photo for a secondary reward.
Congratulations to Ralph for winning the photo contest with his beautifully done Christmas photo.
I look forward to entering any future contests you will have.
I am also going to download a trial of DXO, it sounds like great software.
Thanks for all the effort and time you put into this great podcast.
    Mike

    Michael, Scott and Rick,
Thank you all for the great show today. To go over the fourteen photos and give such great feedback was awesome. To hear the three of you discuss my photo of the goblet was way beyound anything I could have expected. It was a thrill to hear that each of you actually liked it!
Rick, a special thanks to you for offering a free DVD of yours on Photo Shop, it is the first time I have ever received anything in relationship to my photography, I am amazed and pleased.
I Will be downloading the ffree trial of dxo with an eye to purchasing it, it sounds like a great way to cover some of my faults.
Thanks again for a great show, hope you are able to have another contest soon. Also thank you for your dedication and hard work to bring us such an informative show.
Congratulations to Ralph on his much deserved win for the Holiday contest.

What a great show, guys. Congratulations to Mike and Ralph and to all the finalists. Looking forward to your next contest. Maybe you could get Scott Kelby as your guest judge.

I have DXO Pro (ordered it after Luc Marin’s appearance on your show) and I love it. The new DXO plug-in, Film Pack, is also an awesome program.

Keep up the great work, Scott and Michael.

  6. Tom Says:

    Hi,

I have just got a Canon 400D and am really enjoying using it, however I have a few questions relating to RAW.

Firstly is there a piece of software which will allow me to view thumbnails for my RAW files in Windows. I have tried Microsoft’s RAW thumbnail viewer but it doesnt support the 400D.

Secondly, when shooting in Raw + JPG is there a way to just delete the RAW if it isn’t such a good shot and I want to free up some space?

    Thanks for your help,

    Tom.

  7. Kyle McMahon Says:

I would just like to throw it out that I was recently informed that I won the copy of Alien Skin’s Snap Art. Can’t wait for it to show up in my mail!

  8. Landya Says:

    Kyle:
You are so darn lucky. I have been using the trial version of Snap Art. Love it! Intend to buy it soon.

In the meantime, though, my computer has died so I am in the computer doldrums big-time right now. Was very much looking forward to buying Snap Art until my computer bit the dust! Maybe in the future sometime. I hope the special ($100) lasts long enough for me to get a computer back up and running.

  9. Ellen Sweeney Says:

    Thanks for all the help.
    Ellen
