Don’t Buy a 30D - the Canon 40D may be coming!

January 22, 2007: Not a lot of people are reporting this yet - and it may be a hoax - but Engadget is reporting via The Digital Photography Blog, that the Canon 40D may be on it’s way.

Supposedly packing at least 10.2 megapixels of creamy Canon goodness (some are speculating it might go as high as 12) the 40 could be boasting the new Digic III processor, facial recognition focusing, an improved sensor and sensor-cleaning technology.

It will also be made out of cheese and will grant its bearer all the powers of Superman!

OK, I made that last part up.

But seriously, this is exactly how the 30D rumors started - first a trickle, then a steady drumbeat, and then the official acknowledgement from Canon.

I said in the subject of this post that you shouldn’t buy a 30D, but actually there is one you can get - mine! As soon as the 40D is available, you know my 30D will be up on Ebay. Not that I’m a new camera addict, mind you. I’d just be sacrificing for the show.

That’s me - a giver.

Where to I get in line? Or if you speak New York English … where do I get on line?

I know nothing about the 40D, but I know I gotta have one :)

I won’t sell the 30D when I get one … but my old 20D will certainly be retired.

[...] Should I add a “Rumour Mill” category? The Digital Photography Show reports that a Canon 40D may be on the way. Digital Photography Blog posted links to Canon’s website, but those pages have changed to Canon 400D pages! Speculation about features includes the following: We’re hearing a lot of different rumors and guesses about the Canon EOS 40D specifications. [...]

Well, at the least putting the sensor and dust system from the 400D into a 30D would be logical. But is that enough of a change to make it a 40D? Or should we call it a 35D?

I’ll keep my 20D. But will be tempted if the 40D comes out. Really tempted.

I know (partly because you guys told me!) that megapixels don’t mean everything, but it doesn’t make sense for Canon’s entry level DSLR, the 400D (that I own incidentally) to have a higher spec in this area than their enthusiast camera.

I thought it would only be a short time before they updated the 30D. I told my mate this at the back end of 2006, he was about to buy a 30D. Of course he ignored me and bought it anyway. So Mike, if you’re reading this - ha ha! :o)

Mike, if you are reading this - Don’t feel bad at all. I love my 30D and I will keep it when I buy whatever is next.

  6. Ted Clark Says:

U.S. prices on the 20D dropped last week and Canon also began a $900 special promotion on the 30D that includes a $600 lens.

Could be the sign that Canon is trying to clear out the 20D’s and 30D’s ahead of a new release. Fingers crossed.
