February 2, 2007: Welcome to the thexy 37th episode of The Digital Photography Show!

Oh yeah, we’re bringing thexy back!

Today we have a great interview with Michael Rubin of Nikon Inc. Michael tells us all about Nikon’s new Capture NX software. This photo processor is so unique that I couldn’t figure out how the heck to make it work! But Michael walks me through some basic manipulations, and it turns out to be very, very cool.

And, oh yeah, you can win a copy of this $150 software by answering the trivia question we ask in the show. Send your correct responses to TheDigitalPhotographyShow@gmail.com by the date mentioned in the show. We’ll pick one at random to receive Nikon Capture NX. Here’s the NX homepage – you have to click on “English,” then “tutorials” to get to the right page.

Speaking of winning – have you sent an entry into our photo contest yet? You may now that you know that Wacom is the Official Contest Sponsor of The Digital Photography Show! Yes, they will be providing prizes for all our photo contests.

Wacom, have I told you lately that I love you?

The prize this week is a doozy. The fabulous Intuos III 6X8 – a $329 value! Check out its crazy-thexy-coolness here.

The theme for the contest is “love” (just in time for Valentine’s Day).

You must send us a BW photograph with a Love theme and one major twist…at least one item in the picture has to be red or pink.

You can listen to show #36 if you wants hints on how to achieve that look in Photoshop.

Some caveats: It’s a black and white picture with one spot color. You can’t win if you have blue, green or any other colors in it. Please include the EXIF information if you can. And please, make sure you’re entering a picture you really took. Remember, kids, a winner never cheats and a cheater never wins.

People are already entering. You can too by sending a picture no bigger than 800 pixels at its widest edge to TheDigitalPhotographyShow@gmail.com. You can also check out the competition at www.dps.phanfare.com.

The deadline for your submissions is February 19, 2007. So hurry! Happy Valentine’s Day!

    Scott & Michael,

Just a note to say show 37 was a very good show. The interview with Michael Rubin of Nikon was very good and and answered a number of questions I had about Capture NX. I am a Nikon shooter and have been told or read a number of pros and cons in workflows. Some of them covered Capture NX.

The two of you are providing a great service to the digital photography community.

    Keep up the good work,
    Jim Gilliland

  2. Scott Says:

This is such an incredibly nice note, Jim. Thank you!

  3. Michael D. Rubin Says:

Thanks Jim. I had a great time on the show.

    MEA CULPA ALERT:

The T-Mobile Service included with the S7c is 1 YEAR! (not 6 months as I stated in the interview).

Again, feel free to email me with any Capture NX questions:

    Best,

    Michael

  4. Alan from Scotland Says:

Another great show guys. Great interview with Michael - I’ll certainly be taking a look at the Capture NX software. And I would also echo Jim’s point - you two are providing a great service to the community. If you were British I’m sure you would have been Knighted by now for your services to the community ;-)

  5. Mary Says:

Sir Michael…Sir Scott…has a nice ring to it.

Very thexy show, guys. Great interview with Mr. Rubin. Capture NX looks like a very interesting program…certainly worth taking a look at.

  6. Landya Says:

    Question regarding photo contest:

Does the photo have to be taken within the contest time-frame? Or can I use one I took awhile ago?

    Thanks in advance.

p.s. Michael and Scott, I bought a new windows computer and am almost back up and running! Thanks for your advice and help.

  7. Fer Says:

Hey!, great interview. I have just tried the trial and seems like magic how the control point modifies just what is supposed to. And no layer mask!. In my PC though it was just a little slow (I need a mac).

Don’t mean to be rude, but I find it very similar to what DxO Optics Pro has, a little bit less fancier but easier to use. The results, at least for me, where both great.

  8. laanba Says:

I really enjoyed this show as I have all of yours shows. The Digital Photography Show is a recent discovery and after a few weeks it has shot to the top of my podcast list.

  9. Keith Says:

First time listener. Just bought a D70s last week, my first DSLR. Have been using a Nikon F2 since bought new in 1972. Time to go Digital. I was debating as to what software to use with the D70s and after lising to Michael Rubins interview, I now will be downloading the trial Capure NX and giving that a try before anything esle. It sounds great.
    Thanks!
