Free Lightroom Training Tips

February 15, 2007: Now that it’s finally out of beta, Adobe Lightroom is generating a lot of interest, including among our listeners.

According to Popular Photography, it’s going to be a Photoshop replacement for a lot of people. This is from the print version (I can’t find the article online):

So, is the company that brought us one of the most-used imaging tools about to quash its own invention? Perhaps for some photographers, it will. If you rarely dodge, burn, or compositite – if you’re not the kind of image fixer who regularly works on small areas of your picture at a time – you may never need Photoshop again. And if you’ve never used Photoshop before, Lightroom, rather than Photoshop’s little sister, Photoshop Elements, may now be the best program for those who are new to shooting digital or working with RAW Images. Lightroom is a simple and sophisticated tool for the kind of people we know best: the ones who really love photography.

First, an aside: Who decided that Elements is Photoshop’s little sister as opposed to little brother? Does software have a gender? If so, is Lightroom a boy or a girl? And how do you know?  I’ve always been too polite to ask.  I may have to call Debbie Grossman, who authored this piece and does a lot of wonderful writing for Pop Photo, and find how she determines the software’s sex.

Otherwise, Lightroom sounds very cool.

If you want to find out more about Lightroom, check out these online training resources, all of which, I think, have some free videos you can watch.

Michael Tapes has lots of free videos at: http://pictureflow.fileburst.com/_Tutorials/Photoshop_LR/01/index.html
Luminous Landscape has some videos, but they cost $12 (might be worth it, they have a good reputation): http://tinyurl.com/2h9f6v

If you are like me and completely new to Lightroom, I highly recommend the Michael Tapes video tutorials that Scott posted above. The others contain tips for those who already have Lightroom on their computer. I have watched 2 of Michael Tapes’ videos, and they are a great introduction.

I’m just catching up with all of your episodes and have really enjoyed this podcast. I haven’t had time yet to figure out how to rate you on iTunes but I will - definitely 5 stars. I’m a novice photographer who upgraded from a Canon A610 to the Canon 30D and love it but I’m a village idiot with respect to all the lenses out there. Do you recommend any good books which explain the basics of photography along with the lenses? Looking forward to the next podcast.

And do yourself a favour and check out DXO and Bibble. Both are very good Raw converters, and a lot less expensive than Lightroom.

Bibble doesn’t look as good, but with Work queues or batch queues can accomplish the workflow control. With the plug-ins and all the other controls, it is more powerful than Lightroom. Version 5 is supposed to have a greatly improved UI as well as a number of other eagerly anticipated enhnancements, but no date yet. They better get version 5 out fast!

DXO is more like Lightroom, but does a lot more. It’s lens correction is incredible and it’s auto processing is very good too.

Bibble is a worthless program - I know that sounds a bit harsh, but without an UNDO feature, what’s the point?

I downloaded the trial version - put about 20 minutes of work into one image but couldn’t undo the steps. I had to start completely over.

Imagine if you drove 60 miles to your destination, took one wrong turn and had to return home and do the drive all over again…
