February 17, 2007: Welcome to the Thurprising Thirty-Ninth episode of The Digital Photography Show!
Today we have an interview with Michael McNamara, Executive Technology Editor for Popular Photography Magazine. Michael is a very interesting guy who gets to play with all the newest and coolest digital toys – I kind of hate him. But luckily, he shares what he knows with us, including a great tip for saving on inkjet ink. You can read his columns here.
Michael and I also talk about today’s “thurprise,” my newest camera accessory – a new son! David has been living with us through foster care since November of 1995, and his permanent adoption was finally finalized this week.
My kids are my greatest joy, and we are all so happy that David is now a part of our family. Like the hundreds of thousands of children awaiting adoption in foster care, David deserves the security and love of a family who will always be there for him.
And he’s so cute! Look!
We’re very lucky to bring his beautiful spirit into our home. Here’s the link to the Amazon baby registry we set up for him. He never had the chance to have a proper baby shower, so we wanted to do this for him.
In photo news, we talk about some free training resources for Adobe Lightroom and the lively conversation on Allen Rockwell’s blog about whether it’s the camera or the photographer who “makes” the picture. There are links to both stories in the blog pasts preceding this one.
There are only two more days left to submit your photos for our second photo contest. Check out the great entries at http://dps.phanfare.com/album/199114. Also take a look at the fantastic prize the winner will receive –a 6×8 Intuous tablet from Wacom.
As always, a special thank you to our sponsor, Alien Skin, and to our advertiser, DXO Labs. These are companies we are incredibly proud to feature on the show. Check out their free trial downloads today!
Thanks to everyone for listening and joining us here on the blog. You rule!
Scott

Scott,
Congrats on your new addition to your family.
Scott and Michael,
Thanks for jumping into the discussion regarding “camera vs photographer” … it’s been a great debate.

Scott, what a fantastic thing to do for your son! What a fantastic thing he will do for you and your partner. I can think of nothing a person can do for another that is greater than adpotion. It is a gift that will be returned to you both for many many years. Not that it is important, but he is a great looking kid.

Hello Scott and Michael,
I’ve been listening to (and saving) your podcasts for a few months now. I really look forward to them because you are doing a terrific job in making the podcast interesting and useful. It comes across very clearly that you are both very good people! One of these days i will get organized and submit a photo to a contest.
By the way, over the past few years I’ve noticed a tendency to get sleepy while driving on long trips (even had a few close calls!). Since I started listening to your podcasts while on the road, it hasn’t been a problem, so maybe you’ve saved me from driving into a tree or something….who knows.
Anyway, I appreciate your work, your attitude, and your humility. Mere “enthusiasts” indeed!
Best regards,
Ken Jones

Thanks for jumping into the discussion regarding “camera vs photographer” sadly your agurement was slightly flawed
“that different photographer with the same equipment”
is the same as saying
“the the same photographer with different equipment” will get different results - so QED it’s both
Consider - if the camera was set up to take a photo every 3 minutes then you attach it to a dog and let it run around. After the 8 gig card is full up you look at the image - some will be good
Is it the infinite number of monkeys, or is it the infinite number of type-writers

Congratulations Scott! What a nice way to begin my drive to work yesterday! I had goosebumps listening to you describe the finalization. Perhaps I understand better than most as both my daughters are adopted. He is one lucky kid!

Thanks for all the nice thoughts, people. David should only know that people he’s never even met are rooting for him!

Hello Scott,
This is my first time to write you. First of all, congratulations for the new addition to your family. I’m also a foster father of two children. Now they are 26 and 27 years old. This is a very rewarding decision for your family. Keep ahead no matter what.
In relation to your podcast, I find it very interesting. I hear you while I do my daily walk through my neighborhood. In the future I will be participating in your contests.

Mazel Tov Scott !!
We have two adopted children ( now 35 and 34 years old) and one natural child. I can’t tell you how much these children mean to us. Being a parent is a special gift. Enjoy the ride and don’t forget: “You never stop being a parent”
