The Digital Photography Show #40: The Best Books on Photography!

The Digital Photography Show #40: The Best Books on Photography! (20MB, 58mins)

LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

February 24, 2007: Welcome to the Fantastic Fortieth episode of The Digital Photography Show!

Today it’s just the two of us – Michael and I cover the newest hardware and software updates. Then, we answer listener Suzy’s question about the best books for a new digital photographer.

First, though, I talk about www.gethuman.com. Avoid those horrible automated systems!

In camera news, we look at the latest camera releases, including the super-sexy and powerful Canon EOS 1D Mark III (fabulously catchy name by the way!).

On the software side, we once again talk about the uniqueness that is Nikon Capture NX and the sad end of the free Lightroom beta trial. Time to pay, kids.

The books we talk about this week are:

Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Exposure and Learning to See Creatively
Rick Sammon’s Complete Guide to Digital Photography
Scott Kelby’s The Digital Photography Book
Kevin Kubota’s Digital Photography Boot Camp

We’ve picked the finalists for our second photo contest. Check them out at http://dps.phanfare.com/album/199114/288673. The winner will receive –a 6×8 Intuous tablet from Wacom.

As always, a special thank you to our sponsor, Alien Skin, and to our advertiser, DXO. These are companies we are incredibly proud to feature on the show. Check out their free trial downloads today!

Thanks to everyone for listening and joining us here on the blog. You are the sunshine of our lives, yeah.

Scott

  1. Allen Rockwell Says:

Scott, thanks a lot for the info on the 1D Mark III … my wallet is already crying!!!!

This is exactly the camera I’ve been waiting for. I’ve been wanting a few more megapixels and 8 or more frames per second … I never imagined I’d get TEN frames per second. Canon rules!!!!!

  2. Landya Says:

Bryan Peterson’s book “Understanding Exposure” is what taught me the most as a newbie. I started using manual mode on my camera after reading his book, and I have not turned back. I go back to his book quite often. That is the “must have” book in your list. I have a couple of the others.

p.s. Off-topic. Did you guys know that the gorrillapod has finally come out with one for zoom sized DSLRs?

    Hey Guys,

Congrats on another great show. I just wanted to add a book to your collection. If you are just starting out with your first lighting kit of you have been using one for a long time ther is no better book than the “MASTER LIGHTING GUIDE FOR PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHERS” by Christopher Grey. This book is full of easy to understand lighting techniques and tips that will improve all you studio lighting set-ups. Christopher Grey is a guest that you should try to get on the show.

One added thing the Canon camera is really making it hard for me to stick with my current Olympus set up.

    Regards
    Richard

  4. Fer Says:

Landya, I have that version of GorillaPod and it works perfect. The only thing is to take in mind that you will be needing a tripod head, without one it’s kinda hard to aim.

  5. Tim R Says:

How can we improve copyright infringement for photos on the Internet

  6. Eliot Says:

I wonder if Suzy might not be helped most by starting with one of the more general and basic photo guides such as the excellent series of National Geographic Field Guides?

  7. Jason Says:

    Hi Guys!
I’ve been driving all over Arizona and California to move my mother and I have been listening to you many back postcasts of your show. Thank you for educating and entertaining me! Currently I am still listening to the May 2006 shows, but I have 8 hours left to drive to get back to Yosemite and look forward to catching up!
    Thanks,
    Jason

    Richard:
I have heard Christopher Grey on the Lightsource podcast. He was fabulous. I almost bought his book, but I really do not do studio photography. I go to the smartshooter website and he has some great articles there!

    Fer:
Thanks for the tip. I have not purchased it yet. Just pondering.

  10. Brian Dote Says:

Hi guys - you can switch iTunes simply by going to the very bottom of the iTunes interface and then change your country. You can’t buy from another country unless you have billing information for that country (like a credit card with a Japanese billing address), etc. But you can at least read your reviews =).

  11. lisa schaller Says:

    Hello,

Well this is my first time catching your show. I am finding it to be very illuminating! The answer to your question.

Tim R said: “How can we improve copyright infringement for photos on the Internet”

Unfortunatly the only real answer is to not post your images on the internet. Any solution short of that makes your iamges vulnerable to copyright infringement, that’s the sad truth.

Some people make thier images less desirable to thiefs by plastering an ugly watermark right across the center of the image … but that also makes the image less desireable to anyone that you want to view it.

The only solution that I think works at all is to post only smaller, lower resolution images to the web and accept the fact that they will be stolen and there is virtually nothing you can do about that.

I realize that this does not really help you … I don’t think there is an answer at this time.

  13. Tony Y Says:

    Hi Guy’s,

Awesome show again this week. I really enjoy listening to the show and want you to know what a GREAT Job you are both doing. I really loved the book discusion as you can never learn enough. I do have an idea I would like you guys to consider for a possible peice on your show as I would really like to hear your thoughts on the topic. That topic is photo magazines! While I read all of the big mags produced here I find the the photo magazines out of the UK totally put them to shame. One of my favorites is “Digital Camera”, what I do not understand is why the publishing companies don’t produce this type of magazine here so we could all save some money on the cover price. “Digital Camera” covers so much awesome material it’s sad we don’t have some thing similar in the format.

Thanks again for the great show and can’t wait till the next one.

    THANKS!!!!!

  14. Allen Bullman Says:

Question How do I or is there any software I can use to plug my D200 into my PC to view my photos as I take them.

Thanks for a great show, you guys are great!

  15. Michael GW Stein Says:

    Hi Allen,

I believe the program you seek is called Nikon Camera Control Pro. This was previously a function of Nikon Capture, but when Nikon Capture NX was released, they separated the editing function (NX) from the the other cool functions like custom tone curves and tethered control of the camera to Camera Control Pro. I believe it can also support the wireless adapter so you can take photos and transmit them directly to your computer.

    –Michael

  16. Peter M Says:

Just listened to you show for the first time - really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next one.

But, couple of things you guys might like to know. It’s dead easy to switch iTunes stores. Scroll down to the bottom and you should see the United States. Click on it and choose whatever countries store you’d like to see.

I was also amused to learn British people say PRIM-er and not PRIME-er. Coming from the UK this was the first time in my life I have heard primer pronounced PRIM-er. Gave me a good laugh.

  17. Paul Roberts Says:

    *primer*

No we don’t say it like prim-er over here in England we say primer exactly the way you do.

    Paul, London, England.

  18. Eugene G Says:

    Another great show guys. Thanks.
