The Digital Photography Show #43: Canon on the New EOS-1D Mark III and Win Adobe Lightroom!
The Digital Photography Show #43: Canon Talks About the New EOS-1D Mark III and Win Adobe Lightroom! (18.5MB, 53 mins)
March 19, 2007: Welcome to the ferocious forty third episode of The Digital Photography Show!
What a show we have today! First, Michael and I talk about the show’s latest photo contest – “Food on the Move.”
Yup, we want a picture of moving food. (And really, who wouldn’t?) What does that mean? We’re not quite sure either. But it could be a busy waiter running with a crowded tray; it could be an egg shattering on the counter; it could be a winged doughnut (you’ll have to listen to the show to understand that one).
Michael and I talk about the two primary ways of showing motion in a picture, by implying it through blur achieved through the use of a slow shutter speed or image editing software, or by freezing the motion with a fast shutter speed. We don’t care how you do it; we just want to see it.
The prize for the contest will be a Wacom tablet, although we don’t yet know which one. But I’m sure the nice people at Wacom will let us know any day now…
New rules for the contest:
You can only enter three pictures.
You can only have one picture in the finals
The picture should be no more than 800 pixels on its widest side
There is no Fight Club
Send your pictures to TheDigitalPhotographyShow@gmail.com by April 17, 2007 to be in the running!
Then, we talk to Rudy Winston from Canon about the crazy sexy cool EOS-1D Mark III, a camera whose full name I find impossible to remember. It sounds like ship from Star Trek. “Time to board the EOS-ID, Scotty. Take it out at Mark III….” Rudy tells us all about this super-powerful and fast camera, including how it’s like a car.
Then we chat with the charming Tom Hogarty, a guy who seems entirely too young and too hip to be the Product Manager for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, but don’t tell his bosses. Tom takes us through the highlights of this very important program AND gives away a free copy to a listener who can answer the question “What is the last word in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom’s tagline ‘Simplify Photography from Shoot to _______.” The lazy among you can find the answer at the link above.
Thanks to our advertiser DXO (www.dxo.com) for the 20% discount they are only offering to listeners of this show. Try the program for free, and when you’re ready to buy, use the code DPSSHOW.
And don’t forget the fifty buck discount on Alien Skin’s Snap Art. Just call and tell them you heard about it on The Digital Photography Show.
Thanks to everyone for listening and joining us here on the blog. Keep the emails and posts coming. You’re everything we’ve hoped for. You’re everything we need. You are so beautiful, to us…
Scott

When are the photos due for the Food on the Move contest?
Also, the reviews on iTunes have disappeared and I can no longer leave one myself. Do you know what is going on with that?
Thanks for a great show.

Hi Erika,
iTunes is hating our show right now. The reviews are gone, the shows are gone, why us, oh Lord, why us???
Our tech guys are working on the probem even as we speak. We hope.
You’re right - I forgot to give a deadline. It’s April 17, 2007. I put it in the shownotes, too. Thanks for reminding me!

I thought the 4th rule of the photo contest was “don’t talk about fight club” :)
Off to find some food on the move.

Another great show. Enjoyed the interview with Canon representative. Mark III especially.

Scott: I though it was 2007 (re-listen to the opening of the show. You say it’s March 2006)…
Love the show, and I also wish for a spaceship… I mean 1D Mark III… I’d want to own it just to hear the gatling gun effect of the shutter ;)
I still fail to see how Lightroom is a paradigm shift, really. Don’t get me wrong, it seems very good, but paradigm shift? especially at $300 (after April).

Great Show AGAIN Guys. First you guys are not shills, enough said. Second the interview with the Canon rep was outstanding. Very informative and to be honest I did not pick up on any audio problems. Maybe I’m tone def and that’s why I’m taking photos instead of making albums.
Thanks again for a very good episode………..

Hi, Scott and Michael -
I enjoy your podcast more than any other!! I don’t see you guys as shills at all. What’s more, I like hearing about all the products, whether in an ad or interview. I’m new to digital photography - still shooting with a Canon Powershot S70 (& getting terrific pictures) - and listen avidly to you each week as I need to upgrade to a d-slr asap!!!! After listening to your show I downloaded Lightroom and it seems to be just what I need. I’ve been using Picasa but it’s too limited. I’ve improved just listening to the two of you. Can’t decide which SLR is right for me, tho. Any ideas?
Thanks for the show and keep it coming, please!

When I heard the Canon representative say that he just fired off 60 frames showing off the Mark III at the very end of the podcast, I was doubtful. It felt like somewhere around 20 to me. So, I slowed it down and counted (several times, just to check). I count 41 frames, and if I am off, it is likely only by one or two.
So, not that I am trying to say the new Canon is not lightning fast or anything, but the way the rep talked just sounded so biased. In other words, it was opinion when fact was so easily at hand: he could have just reviewed the photos, checked the file number of the last frame, and probably impressed us all even more with a very accurate figure, one we could not doubt. 41 is pretty awesome in just under five seconds, but an offhand comment that it was 60 just makes the cynics out here want to go count.
