The Digital Photography Show #45: Nikon on the D40X and tons of free stuff!
The Digital Photography Show #45: Nikon on the D40X and tons of free stuff! (24MB, 67 mins)
April 1, 2007: Welcome to the forty-fifth forty-fifth episode of The Digital Photography Show! And no, that’s not a typo. You’ll have to listen to the show to find out why not.
We have more interviews today from PMA. Listen to Nikon (a little camera company – maybe you’ve heard of them?) talking about the new D40X as well as some real sweet compacts.
We also have Lexar on about why it matters which memory card you use in your camera.
We’re especially happy on this show to feature some smaller companies who are doing very creative and interesting things in the digifoto space.
Joby makes great little tripods, Tilano Fresco has some clever photo projects you can make in your own home and the XShot is a very handy tool for those of you who enjoy using a point and shot.
And all the contest clues are on their hompages’s linked to above!
And don’t forget about our newest photo contest: “Food on the Move.”
Yup, we want a picture of moving food. (And really, who wouldn’t?) What does that mean? We’re not quite sure either. But it could be a busy waiter running with a crowded tray; it could be an egg shattering on the counter; it’s up to you to use your imagination and creativity to fit the theme.
The prize for the contest will be a Wacom Graphire Bluetooth Tablet. The Graphire Bluetooth gives you over 30-feet of wireless freedom and allows you work without the hassle of a cord. Compatible with any Bluetooth 1.1 or higher computer, the Graphire Bluetooth is easy to install and operate. We really appreciate Wacom’s sponsorship of our contests.
New rules for the contest:
You can only enter three pictures.
You can only have one picture in the finals
You have to state in your transmittal email that it’s OK for us to post the pictures on our Phanfare site.
Send your pictures to TheDigitalPhotographyShow@gmail.com. And check out the entries we’ve received so far at www.dps.phanfare.com.
Thanks to our advertiser DXO (www.dxo.com) for the 20% discount they are only offering to listeners of this show. Try the program for free, and when you’re ready to buy, use the code DPSSHOW.
And don’t forget the fifty buck discount on Alien Skin’s Snap Art. Just call and tell them you heard about it on The Digital Photography Show.
Thanks to everyone for listening and joining us here on the blog. Keep the emails and posts coming. You are the champions, my friend.

What a fun show this was. I sure wish I had heard of the gorilla pod before I bought my Monster Pod, which I do not like! I will be entering the contest to try to win one, it looks great. I like the idea of tranferring the photos to canvas or marbel or what ever, but that company should find an easier web site name. I will try to win a kit though for sure.
Of course I can always use more memory too, mineis fading the older I get.
Thanks again for a fun show.

Hi guys,
I really enjoy your shows. I think this was the episode where you interviewed the Nikon guy about the P5000 compact camera. Nikon is billing this as a compact for the DSLR users, but I think they’re missing the boat, and you let them off the hook. I really wanted to buy the P5000 just for this reason, but closer inspection makes it a bit suspect.
Here’s stuff that DSLR users might want in their compact that Nikon doesn’t give them in the P5000.
1. built-in lens ought to have 28mm equiv. 35mm is not wide enough esp for a P&S that will be shot in tight quarters much of the time at parties, etc. Sure, you can buy the add-on lens, but then you are carrying too much stuff around.
2. 10MP is way too much in a small detector. DSLR owners will want a compact with low noise that will at least stand up to ISO 400 and 800 well. Too many MPs make this impossible.
3. It has to shoot RAW so you can at least better manage higher ISOs
4. Movie mode must be able to utilize optical zoom during recording.
These are things that leave me cold on the P5000.
How about devoting a show segment to finding the perfect compact camera for DSLR owners? Many say it is the Canon G7, but Canon dropped the RAW mode with version–oh well.
Anyway–great show as always.
