April 17 , 2007: Welcome to the full-bodied forty seventh episode of The Digital Photography Show! Why full-bodied? Because full-bodied means “rich in tone and strong in volume.” So crank up the audio and let’s go!

Today our guest is the talented and delightful Bobbi Lane. Bobbi is an accomplished photographer and instructor. She is the author of Creative Techniques for Color Photography and she has a training DVD called Portrait Lighting Techniques.

Bobbi is on today to tell us how you plan and shoot a story with pictures. Whether you call it a photo essay or photojournalism or any other name, how do you use your camera to convey a tale of people, time and place?

It’s really a fantastic chat – Bobbi is a great teacher with a totally accessible approach. You’ll learn what you need to consider before you go on your shoot, what supplies you should bring and how to structure an interesting and compelling narrative with pictures.

Next week, we’ll announce the finalists for our latest photo contest. The lucky winner will get Wacom Graphire Bluetooth Tablet. The Graphire Bluetooth gives you over 30-feet of wireless freedom and allows you work without the hassle of a cord. Compatible with any Bluetooth 1.1 or higher computer, the Graphire Bluetooth is easy to install and operate. We really appreciate Wacom’s sponsorship of our contests.

Thanks to our advertiser DXO (www.dxo.com) for the 20% discount they are only offering to listeners of this show. Try the program for free, and when you’re ready to buy, use the code DPSSHOW.

And don’t forget the fifty buck discount on Alien Skin’s Snap Art and the 50% discount on their excellent Exposure. Just call and tell them you heard about it on The Digital Photography Show.

Thanks to everyone for listening and joining us here on the blog. Keep the emails and posts coming. You make us feel might-eee real.

I absolutely loved the interview with Bobbi Lane. Informative, and fun!!!

I also laughed so hard I cried at Alien Skin moving into cardboard boxes…..

  2. Neil Says:

Just listening to your podcast as I write, and you’ve just got to the bit about shooting in colour but seeing it in B&W. Set your DSLR to shoot in RAW, then set it up to take B&W photos, the display will show you the B&W image but the RAW data is still there and can be adjusted in your computer still. I often do this while taking studio portraits.

  3. Beau Harbin Says:

Thanks very much for this. It was very informative.

  4. Ben Says:

I was listening to the podcast and tried going to the website you mentioned that had the contest photos, and the link did not work. Could you send me the correct link? Thank you!

  5. Scott Says:

Thanks for all your comments, y’all.

Neil, that’s an interesting suggestion. I’m going to try it with my Canon and see how it works.

Ben, the contest photos are at dps.phanfare.com.

  6. Debra Says:

Another great show! While I enjoyed the past few podcasts, this one really had my attention! I really enjoy listening to Bobbi Lane. Very informative!

What fun you had with Alien Skin… It just shows what an awesome company they are!

  7. Martin Says:

Great show. Great job on the interview. Very professional!
I sat in the car and listened to the rest of the show in the parking lot!

  8. Tuyen Says:

That was a great interview! Fun to listen to and very informative. You guys are getting better and better

  9. Landya Says:

My favorite part of this interview was her description of flash and diffusers, etc… I would have loved to hear more in the way of photography “how to” instruction from her, as she has a great way of teaching and explaining. I suggest bringing her back and doing more of technical “how to” photography interview.

  10. Trevor Says:

Great show. Best interview yet, what a fantastic lady Bobbi Lane is, really interesting and informative. As Landya says, you must interview her again for another show.

  11. Cooper Strange Says:

I really appreciated the show! I interact with a lot of everyday shooters, not photographers but just normal folks out there, who want help in not only taking better shots, but really telling the story they want to tell. I really feel this particular interview not only spoke to that topic, but did so in a way that is very applicable to everybody from a higher level photographer to “everyman” with a point-and-shoot camera.

I have actually typed up my own version of show notes and will use it as a resource for others. If people want to “fill in the blanks”, they will have the information to find your podcast and listen for themselves. Thanks.

  12. laanba Says:

Great show. Some people are just naturals at explaining things and Bobbi definitely has that gift. I love the idea of sitting down and writing things out.

  13. David G. Speigner Says:

Great show with Bobbi Lane very informative interesting and well done. Let’s hear from her again. The podcast is getting better and better! These sort of interviews are very interesting and helpful. Also, great info on the blog and comments. (Who knew?)

  14. Bianca Says:

Thanks for a great show guys.

The interview was interesting and informative. I really enjoyed the show. As others have said the show is just going from strength to strength. I can’t help but recommend the show to everyone I meet who is interested in photography.

I loved the part with Alienskin. I laughed so hard. It’s appropriate that his role is head of propaganda. LOL

  15. Nicole Says:

One of your best shows yet guys! Fell a little behind so just got to this show last night! And what a show it was.
Great interview and so informative! The Alienskin piece was a great add on!

    I loved it!
    Thanks!
    Nicole
PS Hope I didn’t make to many English mistakes..

  16. Ann Anderson Says:

Really enjoyed hearing Bobbi Lane on your show. While gear is important, it’s ultimately just a tool. The substance of photography and “how to” shows are of great interest to me. Bring on more!
I have taken loads of workshops/classes from lots of sources - some great and some not.
I can say first-hand that Bobbi’s a talented educator and, as you described, fun and accessible. Bobbi’s classes are always terrific and if you want to take your photography to another level; find her locally in CT or NY or at the many workshops she teaches nationally. It will be time and money well invested.
