June 1, 2007: Welcome to the fifty-third episode of The Digital Photography Show!

On this show we critique and judge our latest photo contest: The Natural World. We’re joined by the multi-talented and always instructive Kevin Kubota.

Kevin is a rock star of a photographer – rated one of the top ten wedding photographers in the world! He also teaches workshops and markets his own line of Photoshop actions that will make it looks as if you spent hours in the digital darkroom – in just minutes!

As I’ve said before on this blog (see previous entry) the vast majority of entries we received for this contest were wonderful, beautiful, fabulous – you name it. On today’s show, you’ll find out who wins the grand prize – a Wacom Graphire 6×8 tablet.

Check out the finalists here.

We’d love to hear what you thought of the show either here on the blog or at TheDigitalPhotographyShow@gmail.com.

We also talked (off air) to Kevin about the possibility of his doing a workshop just for our listeners. Would you be interested in attending a workshop with me, Michael and twenty or so of your fellow listeners? We don’t know where or when yet, but if enough of you are into it, we’ll talk to Kevin about locking something in.

Michael and I think it would be great to meet and shoot with you. And we’d all have a ball learning from Kevin.

Thanks to our advertiser DXO (www.dxo.com) for the 20% discount they are only offering to listeners of this show. Try the program for free, and when you’re ready to buy, use the code DPSSHOW.

And don’t forget the fifty buck discount on Alien Skin’s Snap Art (http://www.alienskin.com/snapart/index.html) and the 50% discount on Exposure (http://www.alienskin.com/exposure/index.html) . Just call and tell them you heard about it on The Digital Photography Show.

Thanks to everyone for listening and joining us here on the blog. Enjoy the finalists!

Scott

Just finished listening to the podcast and wanted to share some thoughts. First off, congrats to Landon for the winning shot! What an interesting flower and the composition is just lovely.

Secondly, there was some discussion on my Curl of the Lily photo and about whether it was an in-studio shot, but actually it was taken in my garden outside in the evening. For some reason on that side of the yard I get consistently great bokeh :) The feedback I received for my shot was priceless and I wanted to thank all of you for that. I never expected to win but was completely thrilled to be chosen as a finalist.

Third of all I wanted to thank Scott and Michael for providing a forum where we photographers can showcase our work. Having been part of a group who run a weekly photography contest/forum I know it’s not an easy task, and that everyone has their own ideas of how things should be done. So thanks to you guys for all your hard work!

    See you next contest…

Congratulations Landon! I thought of sending you a private message but didn’t want to spoil the surprise if you hadn’t listened to the show.

BTW Micheal, Scott and Kevin, those heart shaped flowers are very abundant where I live in Toronto, Ontario. They are a flowering plant called “bleeding heart”, it’s a perennial. My daughter loves them.

  3. Gerald Paul Says:

Absolutely fun and informative to listen to your show and detailed critique to each photo. I learned a lot, thanks to you Kevin, Scott and Michael for very helpful comments that I received for my photo, and also learning from the others.

Great entries overall, I can imagine how hard it was to choose the finalists … of course congratulations to Landon.

Looking forward to your next shows …

  4. Tim Says:

Wow, what a great collection of images. Congratulations Landon! I’ve taken lots of pictures of that plant (someone told me it was an wild Asian Jack-in-the-Pulpit) but I love the composition and the angle of the flower itself in your shot.

I’m thinking the next contest should be wildflower related. Clearly we need to get Scott some more exposure to some interesting flora! :-)

  5. Scott Says:

    Thanks for you comments, all.

Kelly, your shot was well and truly loved by us all. Very gracious of you to congratulate Landon.

Holly and Tim - If we do another contest with a lot of flowers, we’re going have to have one of you on air to tell us what the heck we’re looking at!

  6. Holly Sisson Says:

    Scott,

No, no! I am not a flower/garden person! My mother is, but she knows nothing about photography! ;-)

That plant is fairly easy to recognize though as it really does look like a “bleeding heart”. :-)

Another great contest and, as always, very informative!

  7. Stephen Voss Says:

Just finished listening to the show. Congratulations Landon! Your picture was unique in so many ways and deserved the win.

Thank you, Kevin, Scott and Michael for your time and feedback it is invaluable for us as listeners to hear other people speak so eloquently about our work and very encouraging.

Thank you for all the time that you invest in this show, you are furthering the art of making pictures.

  8. Landya Says:

Yesterday, I returned from a business trip in Chicago and decided to see who won the contest. I clicked on the finals and was stunned and shocked (and, yes, thrilled) to see my “bleeding hearts” made it that far. I considered the finals unreachable after seeing the entries. I really did.

Gorgeous winning photo. A piece of fine art. Great choice. Great show. Thanks.

  9. MaryG Says:

Congratulations Landon on a great picture and well deserved win. Thanks to Kevin, Scott and Michael for your well thought out comments and critiques on all the finalist’s entries. I learn so much from these shows and am grateful for the time and effort you put into them. And finally, congratulations to all the finalists…any one of you could have won, and deservedly so.

Just thought I’d let everyone know that the Canon M80/M30 have made their way onto the Canon UK site!

  11. Landon Says:

Thanks so much everybody! What a great bunch of photos and a great selection of finalists. I was surprised for sure of the win.

Bleeding hearts, those also come in white by the way. They are in gardes all over the Northwest as well.

Scott, I sent you my contact information via gmail, as well as my followup to the calendary idea. Please let me know if you got it or not.

Humbled and excited to use the Wacom!
