June 28, 2007: Welcome to the fifty-eight episode of The Digital Photography Show!

Today, we have a great feature for you - the best shopping sites on the web (see list below).

We introduce on today’s show to two of our listeners, Bob Garas, winner of many photo competitions, and Laurel Housden, Queen of All Contests.

We then talk about the workshop Michael and I are going to attend for his not- birthday.

We also are asking you to nominate us for a Podcast Award. Yes, we know, awards are petty and shallow, but, luckily, so are we! Here’s how you can help out.

1) Just click the link to go to www.podcastawards.com.

2) Click on the small blue text in the top box that says “Click here to nominate.”

3) When there, you can enter us in People’s Choice and one other category. But since we probably will never win the People’s Choice, don’t bother with that one.

Just nominate us in the Cultural/Artscategory. Don’t nominate us for any other category - if you nominate us for more than one category (with the exception of “People’s Choice,”) neither vote counts!

You have to fill out our show’s name and our URL like this:

The Digital Photography Show

http://www.thedigitalphotographyshow.com

4) Then, you have to go to the bottom of the pageand enter your name, your email, and whether you’re a podcaster, listener or both.

5) Hit “Submit” and you’re done!

You can only nominate us once, so when you’ve taken care of this, you’re done!

We can’t give you a prize for nominating us for an award (that would be bribery, which is wrong. Plus, we’d get caught and discredited.) but we can send you a prize if you sign up for email notifications from our show! We will pick one subscriber at random to win either a copy of onOne’s Plug-In Suite 3 for Adobe Photoshop, Alien Skin’s Snap Art or Rick Sammon’s DVD “Rick Sammon Live.” You get to choose.

    Great show guys.

I wanted to comment on the bit about Amazon.com. I am a hopeless Amazonian … I buy almost everything there and for 3 very important reasons:

    1. Their return policy is fantastic
    2. Their prices are almost always the best you’ll find
    3. As an “Amazon Prime” member I get “free” 2nd day air shipping on all orders and I can upgrade to next day air for only $3.99

I put the word “free” in quotes above because becoming a Prime member is something you pay for (annual membership fee), but if you use Amazon a lot it will pay for itself very quickly.

I live in a pretty remote desert area, my nearest store of any kind (other than the gas station and Circle K) is over 10 miles away, my nearest camera store is 40 miles away, my nearest computer store (BestBuy or Circuit City) is about 30 miles away. I can order something from Amazon.com, pay the extra $3.99 and have it the next day and save $15-$20 in gas (I’ve got a big-ass Dodge RAM 4×4 pickup ) and never leave my air-conditioned office.

I heard Leo LaPorte once say that he buys his toilet paper from Amazon and pays the $3.99 to have it delivered the next day, saving him a trip to the grocery store. I’m not that bad yet … YET!

In my experience the best online store for photography equiptment here in the UK is Warehouse Express @ http://www.warehouseexpress.com. They also have a great forum and online auction site.

  3. Mary Says:

Great show, guys. I really enjoyed listening to the interviews with Bob and Laurel.

The pictures put up so far for the duotone contest are awesome. I especially liked Michael’s “Bee Butt” picture and Allen’s “Red Squirrel” picture. Did you guys use photoshop for the duotone effect? The colors are gorgeous!

  4. Anthony Says:

Another great show. Here’s a few more links for your UK listeners.

http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk - lists all Canon and Nikon equipment and all other stuff you might need and shows all the prices at various on line and bricks & mortar shops.

http://www.quidco.com - favourite of mine. It hasn’t got anything to do with photography but saves you money by getting you cash back on a load on online shops. I got £15 back from Jessops when I bought my camera. I also use it for paying for Insurance, got £45 back last year.

http://www.hotukdeals.com - another favourite that hasn’t got anything to do with photography but you do get the occasional post about deals on blank DVDs, Flash cards and online printing.

  5. Laurel Says:

    Hey Everyone,

I am starting to get little notes of thanks with the photo contest submissions!! It is so great to be a part of the Digital Photography Show community. Thanks for the comments!

I have a questions…I went to Sanibel Island Florida for vacation a few weeks ago and in the gift shops there were some very attractive photos of the area done by a local artist. The photos were displayed in a 4 x 6 note card enclosed in a plastic sleeve for protection. The artist was charging $3.50 per card - and I thought very reasonable. For the life of me…I can’t find any place online to purchase these types of 4 x 6 note cads WITH the plastic sleeve. I’ve seen artists do the same thing at art shows…Can anyone help me with some suggestions of places online that may sell this product. I am thinking about doing a local art show and need some ideas on how to display my pictures for sale. Note cards would be reasonable to print..

Thanks for your advice and help. Keep the contest entries coming!!

    Cheers,
    Laurel

    Laurel,

    Try http://www.jampaper.com

I think that might have what you want.

Let me know how it works out.

  7. Aaron Bailey Says:

Great show. I also wanted to add a store that has really impressed me: http://pictureline.com/

I bought my Nikon VR 18-200 lens from them. Not only did they have a great price for the lens, they upgraded (at no charge) the UV filter I ordered to go with the lens when they discovered their stock was out. I also had a warranty issue w/ the lens - Although they didn’t have another VR lens to send me (they are hard to keep in stock) they have checked up w/ me twice during the warranty repairs to make sure I was being taken care of by Nikon. Now that’s customer service!

  8. Laurel Says:

Thanks Mary for the tip. They has some really great stuff. I was looking through July POP Magazine and in the back was a web site for http://www.photographersedge.com that had exactly what I was looking for. They even had some fantastic tips on approaching gift shops, etc with selling your note cards.

  9. Peter Forrester Says:

Hi Guys ( & or course, Laurel),
    Love the show !!
A couple of times recently you have commented about folks getting unsubscribed from iTunes. I think I might know what’s going on because it’s happened to me a few times.

iTunes seems to monitor not just that you’ve downloaded a podcast but also whether you’ve actually listened to it. If you transfer the podcast to an iPod and listen on that then it doesn’t seem to recognise this as listening and after a few more downloads it will unsubscribe the podcast, presumably assuming that you’re not interested. You can stop this by occasionally playing the podcast directly from iTunes on your PC - you’ll only need to play a few seconds to fool it. Alternatively it will highlight the unsubscribed podcasts with a “!” in the left margin. Clicking on this will re-subscribe.

    Hope this helps.

Keep up th egood work & very best wishes

I know this is totally off topic with this subject - but I just have to share this virtual tour with everyone. My friend, Aaron is a professional panoramic and virtual tour photographer and he just returned from a VT conference in San Francisco and he took this full emersion Virtual Tour of the Golden Gate Bridge. I feel like I have been there now!!
