July 13, 2007: Welcome to the fifty-ninth episode of The Digital Photography Show!

Today, we have a great interview with Rick Sammon, one of the best triple-threat photographer/writer/teachers out there.

Rick shares his Top Ten Tricks for Ultimate Travel Photography. Click here for the original article as it appeared in PC Photo magazine.

Rick also tells us about his new DVD “Rick Sammon’s Canon EOS Digital Rebel Personal Training Photo Workshop.” This is a great resource not only for Digital Rebel users, but anyone who wants to know how to better employ their DSLRs. You’ll get 90 minutes of creamy Sammon goodness as he takes you on location and gives you his one-on-one training in how to get the most out of your DSLR.

Michael and I also talk about Scott Kelby’s blog and the New York Times article on choosing the best entry-level DSLR (see post below).

We also are asking you to nominate us for a Podcast Award. Nominations close at midnight on July 14, so act fast! Here’s the simple five-step plan for how you can help out.

1) Just click the link to go to www.podcastawards.com.
2) Click on the small blue text in the top box that says “Click here to nominate.”
3) When there, you can enter us in People’s Choice and one other category. But since we probably will never win the People’s Choice, don’t bother with that one.
Just nominate us in the Cultural/Arts category. Don’t nominate us for any other category – if you nominate us for more than one category (with the exception of “People’s Choice,”) neither vote counts!
You have to fill out our show’s name and our URL like this:
The Digital Photography Show
http://www.thedigitalphotographyshow.com
4) Then, you have to go to the bottom of the pageand enter your name, your email, and whether you’re a podcaster, listener or both.
5) Hit “Submit” and you’re done!

You can only nominate us once, so when you’ve taken care of this, you’re done!

We can’t give you a prize for nominating us for an award (that would be bribery, which is wrong. Plus, we’d get caught and discredited.) but we can send you a prize if you sign up for email notifications from our show! We will pick one subscriber at random to win either a copy of onOne’s Plug-In Suite 3 for Adobe Photoshop, Alien Skin’s Snap Art or Rick Sammon’s DVD “Rick Sammon Live.” You get to choose.

    Scott,
I am listening to the latest podcast right now, I just got to the point when you mentioned your interest in the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. Rent it, use it, then FOR SURE you will buy it. This is Canon’s very best lens in my opinion (and in the opinion of people that know a lot more than me about lenses).

The only thing that could possibly be better would be a 100-400mm f/2.8L IS but we’ll never see one of those since it would be about 6″ in diameter, about 10lbs and 2′ long :)

  2. Mark Varley Says:

Just listening to the show now, You mention that you don’t know of any pro’s using cameras other than canon or nikon. Well my partner and I are both professional photographers and we both shoot with olympus, I have an E300 and my partner has an E500. I’ve used olympus for years now, my partner previously used Fuji digital and nikon 35mm.
Great show, keep up the great work.

PS, is there a website banner for linking to the show?

  3. Scott Says:

Allen – I thought you were sending me one of those lenses for my birthday – what happened?

Mark, you are absolutely correct – many pros use cameras other than Nikon or Canon. Fuji and Sigma come to mind as popular among wedding photographers because of their excellent rendition of skin tones. What I SHOULD have said is that among pros who are out there teaching workshops, everyone I ever met shoots Canon or Nikon.

  4. Laurel Says:

    Hey Everyone!

The “Little Critters in Duotone” Contest is offically closed. I have just updated the Phanfare Contest Page as of 11.30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on Monday, July 16th. We have a total of 377 entries! I noticed some entries in the SPAM box – so if you were wondering why your pictures were not posted until now – it was probably there.

There are some amazing photographs. This community continues to inspire me! Good Luck to everyone with the contest..

    Cheers,
    Laurel

  5. Mark Says:

Why don’t you go up against TFTTF in the education category. I think you’re by far the best 2 podcasts out there – would have been nice to see how you measure up against each other.

  6. Allen Rockwell Says:

    Crazy Scott said:
“Allen – I thought you were sending me one of those lenses for my birthday – what happened?”

It’s my birthday this week … what are you sending me?

  7. Fakhra Says:

    Hi there guys,

GREAT episod indeed -Sammon’s tips were very informative.
    Scott, I live in the UAE (Middle East) and YES we have the service for pumbing gas into our cars {you were keen to know in a previous episod ;)}
Keep up the great work guys.

  8. Alan Hutchison Says:

Does anyone have a link to the 5-in-1 reflector unit mentioned by Rick?

    Thanks for another great show.

  9. Craig Says:

Alan, there are a few companies who make 5-in-1 reflectors, in a variety of sizes. Here’s a link to those sold by B&H, for example: http://tinyurl.com/235ya5

  10. Wade Says:

Hey I found this site other day whilst surfing facebook.

They rent lenses and Camera and the have the new mk III

  11. Ruan Says:

    Scott,

In the interview with Rick you mention ‘I can focus faster too when my aperture is wide open’. I assume you meant that more light helps the camera to focus faster, which is true. But AFAIK the lens is only stopped down to the smaller aperture after you’ve achieved focus and press the shutter button, i.e. when composing the shot the lens is wide open. Is this correct or am I missing something?

    Thanks
    Ruan

  12. Tom W Says:

Yes, you are right. The aperture is only stopped down when the shutter button is pressed or the depth of field preview button is pressed. The rest of the time, the lens is at its largest aperture meaning that the viewfinder is bright and autofocus functions well.

  13. MarcM Says:

When is Rick’s DVD/book “Canon Digital Rebel Personal Training Photo Workshop” due to be released. I see you can pre-order. Was just curious.

    Thanks – Marc

  14. Jason Says:

I would agree that as far as podcasts go, DPS and TFTTF are probably two of the most popular. Don’t forget though, there are also vid-casts and these tend to draw more attention as we are a visual crowd! :) A few that come to mind are the photoshopTV one that comes out of NAPP, and another coming from a site known as Radiant Vista. Not sure if The Online Photographer has any regularly published media in the form of a podcast, blog, or vid-cast, but that’s also a good resource. Will be looking for the DPS on the awards site to cast my vote! Great job guys, and thanks for all you do!

  15. Scott Says:

Jason – THanks for nice words. We’re looking at doing something with video, but its not easy and the technology isn’t quite there yet to make anything that’s universally playable. We may do the iPod format, but that leaves out other players – although you could still watch it on your computer in iTunes. And it wouldn’t be every show – after all, much of the show is me and Michael, and who wants to wathc us? But maybe for shows where we talk about pictures some video would be helpful.

Marc, I think it’s out already.

Tom W – thanks for the hint!

  16. Daniel Says:

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article The Digital Photography Show #59: Rick Sammon’s Top Ten Tips for Ultimate Travel Photography, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.

  17. Chris Paxman Says:

SCOTT!! I am laughing my head off… at the end of the Rick interview.
S:”Is there anything else you do that is extraordinairy?”
    R”Well”
S: “Or do we have to ask your wife?”

You dirty bird!! ha ha ha.
