I’m not sure if you guys knew this or not, but the Pentax K10D can actually record in two raw formats, Pentax’s proprietary format and Adobe DNG.

I really enjoyed your podcast. It is nice to hear people shot and do photography for the pleasure of it.
Your list of tips reminded me of a list I have been keeping based off of the old Murphy’s Laws for Soldiers for the last 10 years.
Murphy’s Laws of photography
1. You are not Ansel Adams.
2. Neither are you Herb Ritz.
3. Automatic Cameras—Aren’t.
4. Auto Focus—won’t
5. If you can’t remember, you left the CF cards or film at home.
6. No photo assignment remains unchanged after the first day of shooting.
7. When in doubt, motor out.
8. If a photo shoot goes too smoothly, then the lab will lose the film or the computer will crash.
9. If it’s stupid but it works, it isn’t stupid.
10. Success occurs when no one is looking, failure occurs when the Client is watching.
11. The most critical card will be corrupt, or roll of film will be fogged.
12. If you forgot, then you did not rewind the film or If you did forget reformatted the card you just shot.
13. Photo Assistants and interns are essential, they give photographers someone to yell at.
14. The one item (batteries, cards, film, and ect.) you need is always in short supply.
15. Interchangeable parts aren’t.
16. Long life batteries only last for a couple of Cards or rolls of film.
17. Weather never cooperates.
18. Everything always works in your home, everything always fails on location.
19. For every photo, there is an equal and opposite criticism.
20. The newest and least experienced photographer will usually win the Pulitzer.
21. Every instruction given to a lab, which can be misunderstood, will be.
22. There is always a way, and it usually doesn’t work.
23. Never tell the Photo Editor you have nothing to do.
24. Things which must be shipped together as a set, aren’t
25. No photojournalist is well dressed.
26. No well dressed photographer is a photojournalist.
27. Professional photographers are predictable; the world is full of dangerous amateurs.
28. The nature shots invariably happen on two occasions:
-when animals are ready.
-when you’re not.
29. Same rule just substitute children.
30. Client Intelligence is a contradiction.
31. There is no such thing as a perfect shoot.
32. The important things are always simple.
33. The simple things are always hard.
34. Flashes will fail as soon as you need them.
35. A clean (and dry) camera is a magnet for dust, mud and moister.
36. Photo experience is something you never get until just after you need it.
37. The self-importance of a client is inversely proportional to his position in the hierarchy (as is his deviousness and mischievousness).
38. You can’t spell cheap without AP.
39. Photographers make the worst clients.
40. You can’t spell stupid without UPI.
41. All or any of the above combined.

First off, your show is great! I switched from film to digital this past April and started listening to your show. You helped me out in so many ways!
My wife and I moved to a remote area of Ghana this October and your tips, tricks, & interviews helped me get the right equipment.
One of the things I bought was a Gary Fong Cloudsphere - lots of situations here have very poor lighting conditions due to little or no electricity. The lightsphere has been amazing and is worth every penny of the $50 paid for it.

I’ve tried to download the CaptureNX software. When I click on the “Americas” download link I get a page that says Operation Failed -Illegal Parameter. Firefox and IE6 Yield the same result. Anybody else having trouble?
BTW, great show! Thanks Michael Rubin for explaining Capture NX. I’d like to try it, but…..

Ok, guess I answered my own question. I found another way in through nikonusa.com tech support. I was able to download v 1.2, but not the 1.3. Installing now….

The question came up during the show about whether the DNG format was “open source.” Adobe describes it on their web site (http://www.adobe.com/dng) as “A publicly documented and readily available specification…” and “a nonproprietary file format…”
So does that mean open source? Don’t know. Since it’s “publicly documented,” though, I believe their intent is to make it possible for 3rd party developers to create software that can take advantage of everything DNG offers.
