February 12, 2008 : Welcome to the eighty third episode of The Digital Photography Show!

On today’s show, Michael and I talk with Nikon at PMA 08. They have a new entry-level DSLR with some terrific features - the D60. It’s their smallest, lightest DSLR ever, you can do a ton of editing right on the camera’s LCD, and you can even use a kind of mini-mode to approximate moving images. Throw in an image stabilized kit lens, compatibility with many of Nikon’s excellent lenses, and 10.2 megapixel images, and the D60 is a very formidable contender for the new DSLR shooter - or for the more advanced user looking for an inexpensive backup.

Michael and I also talk about PhotoWalks. Find out more about them here and here. Not to mention here.

If you’ve gotten a new digital camera for the holidays, or if you’ve received a new software program that you want to know how to use, check out xTrain, a great web-based learning resource. They have a ton of on-line videos that will teach you how to do pretty much everything with your camera - and your computer - that you might ever want to do. And exclusively for our listeners, they offer a 15% off discount on any xTrain course or membership plan by using the code DPS on the page you’ll find here.

Please remember to sign up for email notifications from our show! Every podcast subscription service out there - and that includes you, our beloved iTunes, has a bad habit of sometimes unsubscribing you from the shows you enjoy. Like this one (we hope!).

Thanks for yet another great show. The Photowalks sounds like a lot of fun. I recently found a web site called meetup.com which seems to be a similar thing. I haven’t used it yet, but I will soon. Go to http://www.meetup.com/browse/ and enter “photography”for thetopic and your zip code to find a group close to you. This is what a search for the Washington DC area (zip 20330) would look like.
    http://www.meetup.com/search/?keywords=photography&locationPickerRef=0&dbCo=us&dbOutsideUsLink=&country=us&zip=20330&x=49&y=15

I’m looking forward to your next show, even though you just presented the PMA Nikon interview (what else do we need, right Michael?)

  2. Paul Says:

    Mikael,

I used the meetup website several months ago to finally find a photo club near home (between Baltimore and DC). All the other clubs in the area involved too much travel time. I like the idea of the photowalk along with joining a club to actually go out and take photos with people with a similar interest. The photo club I joined through meetup is pretty cool - we meet at a restuarant, do a lot of talking, and trade a ton of good info and ideas but don’t often get out and take photos.

Anyone out there want to participate in a photowalk in the DC, Baltimore, Columbia MD area?

Looking forward to the next show since I shoot with a Konica Minolta (now Sony) brand (gasp - not a Canon/Nikon ;-)

As always another great show. I really appreciate the time and effort Scott and Michael invest to put together the podcast.

    Paul

  3. Matt Says:

    Hey everyone,

I haven’t had a chance to listen to episode #83 yet, it’s in my IPOD docket :-)

I just wanted to share a couple of very informative sites that I have been trolling through this week. One is Moose Petersons site (if you read Scott Kelby’s blog you have heard of Moose Peterson). He has lots of great information on his site about photography and photoshop. A real treasure, especially if you like his great photographs. Site address: http://www.moosepeterson.com/home.html

Another site is by Ken Rockwell, http://www.kenrockwell.com. If you click on the How-To link he has literally a hundred or so very informative articles. The articles range from reviews to opinion to lessons. In his gallery he also has a section for ‘How I took this shot’. After reading these two sites my head if completely full!
And no, I do not work for either photographer:-) Hope you enjoy the information.

Thanks again for all the hard work you guys put in each week.
    Matt

  4. Scott Says:

    Thanks for all the comments!

Mikael, glad to give you your Nikon fix.

Paul, thanks for appreciating us. We appreciate you! Mark, who put together the photowalk I just did, is planning another DC based one here: http://www.revellphotography.com/blog/?p=441

Matt, Moose is well known to us - we’ll have to have him on someday. So many great photographers, so little time! Same thing with Ken, who I think we sent a note while we are PMA, but we didn’t get together.

  5. Marcy Says:

I wanted to let you know I finally caught up on all your past episodes so now I must wait one week for a new one, like all the other listeners. I decided to only listen to your podcast when I’m cleaning house. This way I have something to look forward to, (not the house cleaning) and it makes the task that much more bearable. I put on my headphones and go to town cleaning, vacuuming, etc.. Your longer episodes are a bonus; I get my house even cleaner! Today, I cheated and listened to you in the car since I just cleaned my house. You guys are great and I thank you for keeping this up week after week.

    ~Marcy

  6. Mikael Says:

Matt, Ken Rockwell is in the same photo club as me here in San Diego and he’s quite a character who really know his stuff. The cool thing is that he buys **every** DSLR and lens that both Canon and Nikon releases to review it. To make sure he’s independent it is all out of his own pocket. I assume his family doesn’t get any food after all the cameras and lenses they released during the fall. He actually has an article about how to afford stuff.

As Scott and Michael was discussing Smugmug I checked it out. There doesn’t seem to be any free trials like Flickr has. Maybe that could be arranged for all of us when you interview the Smugmug guys (assume it is on the to-do list).

  7. Herne Says:

Regarding photo sharing, have you considered a site like deviantART? It’s not really a photo sharing website per se, but it does have a lot of community features like forums and chat rooms, and you can log on for free or pay for a subscription. I don’t work for deviantART, but I am a member…

    http://www.deviantart.com

  8. Pat Taylor Says:

Regarding Flickr… I swear you guys are on crack! Flickr is excellent. It has EXACTLY the feature set that you’re looking for in a service for sharing photos for the show. Full-res downloads, commenting, forums, etc. I urge you to really give it another look! I tend to disagree that the interface is ugly, I find it to be clean and extremely functional with all the appropriate options readily at hand.

    Thanks for another great episode!
    Pat

  9. Paul B Says:

DXO OPtics Pro v5 for the Mac coming soon!

    http://www.news.com/8301-13580_3-9861699-39.html

  10. Calvin Lee Says:

I agree with Scott that Flickr’s interface is ugly….and I swear I am not on crack. If you have tired others such as Smugmug you would agree. I switched from Flickr long time ago.

    Great show Scott and Michael!

    Calvin

  11. John McCormack Says:

    re: Photo sharing sites.

    I use Pbase - http://www.pbase.com/
which has been around since 1999. It’s not free but they don’t bombard you with pop-up ads and banners. Cost is US$23 yearly for 500 Megabytes of photo storage or US$60 yearly for 1500 Megabytes of photo storage.

I don’t work for Pbase but am very happy with the site.

  12. Herne Says:

Just wanted to mention that the DPS is #2 in the “Featured” section of the Canadian iTunes today.

  13. Trevor Carpenter Says:

Hey there! I’m the publisher and main organizer of Photowalking.org.

Thanks for the plug and mention in this episode and here in the show notes.

For all interested in photowalking in your area, you should know that a service like Photowalking.org is available for all. I help all interested in organizing photowalks in their own local area. I have several authors submitting announcements and recaps for their own photowalks, and if you don’t find one in your area, I’ll help you get a group started.

I’m also working on strengthening my own forum to help drive the conversation. In the mean time we’re also active on our own Flickr group.

(I’ve not included the links, I don’t want to take advantage of this venue.)

  14. Matt Says:

If your looking for someone to talk about photowalking look to Thomas Hawk, http://www.thomashawk.com. He’s also the CEO of Zooomr another photo sharing site. He takes great photos and has some interesting photography life goals. I think he would be a great guest! I don’t know him personally, but do follow his photos in his RSS feed.

    Matt in Iowa

  15. Chris Patterson Says:

I think SmugMug is by var the most beautiful and best photo sharing site out there. Highly customizable, unlimited storage and bandwidth and pretty cheap.

  16. Dale Stringham Says:

Scott and Michael, thanks for the great podcast.

I ignored phanfare’s announcements and when the upgrade came I was P!$$ED. No default public access, requirement to login to the site (guess they want to harvest my friends & family for further marketing). I just wasn’t happy. Sent in a complaint. The response? Hey, if you don’t like it, hit the highway. Gave me a link to smugmug and an offer to refund my prorated fee.

Not my idea of customer friendly. They said that, “we were attracting a greater number of small business users than the audience we wanted to become our target market - family photo sharing”.

I guess you pay for an advertised service and then, if the provider doesn’t like the way things are working out, they can change the agreement at any time.

I’m looking for a new site to host my photos: flikr is out for me–it’s too “public”. I liked phanfare as I could refer friends and family without having to worry about people with “undesirable” motives browsing my photos.

Anyway, two thumbs down for phanfare’s “upgrade”. THREE thumbs up for The Digital Photo Show!

  17. Dan Says:

    Hey guys….
I do not know how free monetarily or sharing-wise these sites are, but zenfolio seems rather sexy… but it seems more geared to the pro photographer as a storefront. Also, there is a site called photoshelter… again, not really sure what they are geared to… okay… just checked it out and it seems that photoshelter is more directed to vending your images and zenfolio has a less market-based approach.

Don’t know how helpful this was or was not, but I also want to let you guys know that I love the show and listen religiously (if not always in a timely fashion!).
Keep up the great work and have fun with all of those sexy new Nikons, Michael.

But don’t get sucked into the highest end yet… I shoot with a Rebel XT, then the XTi came out, now the XTs or whatever it was called is calling my name along with the 40D and it is just insane how many cameras have come out in the last year! Sorry for the rant! Love the Show!

    Dan

  18. Landya Says:

Smugmug is absolutely awesome! I am a longtime Smugmug user and fan. While the photo galleries are first-rate, the best thing about Smugmug is its customer service. If you do not get an immediate answer from their “support” forum (which has always worked for me), you can email them and they are prompt and always friendly. They will not leave you until you are completely clear on the issue and all is well.

Absolutely great business. Always getting better and adding more features. I designed my Christmas card this year with their new card options. I recommend Smugmug with all kinds of fanfare! (sorry for the pun)

And, if you want to save $5 on your Smugmug signup fee, you can use my referral code:

  19. Alex Says:

I’d like to second the nomination of PBase, which I too have used for years. It has attracted a very friendly community, and the popular albums on the site are beautiful indeed. It is not free, but the interface is great, and you have complete control over the look of your pages.

The one drawback I can think of might be if you want listeners to be able to post their own pictures for free. For that, I would suggest you contact the proprietor; it is still a low-key site, and I’d guess they’d be extremely pleased to have you as users. So, they might well be willing to accommodate such a need, if indeed it exists.

  20. Dan Ogren Says:

Scott, I just ran across this episode when I was listening to back episodes and was wondering if you ever posted the pictures from this walk? I grew up in Bethesda and would be interested in seeing what you took pictures of. By the way Great Show!
