Hi guys, I use the 40D's live view when I'm using a tripod extensively; despite the rumours it's easy to use, just press the centre "set" button and its on, and unlike what I hear about the 1D, you just hit the autofocus button on the back. The moveable focus point also acts as a spot meter in live view, and you get DOF preview. When doing portraits it lets you chat more freely with your subjects; try it Scott, it's easier and better than some reviews have said. Lots of reviews have said it doesn't autofocus, but they probably didn't notice that it is turned on and off by a menu item.

I'm sure the Sony is better, but the 40D isn't getting enough credit for its useability.

Another thing about Sony is that they have Minolta's heritige and Minolta historically has been quite innovative - giving us SLR autofocus and sensorshift image stabilisation for example.

A good article on the different philosphies of the DSLR camera manufacturers was written by Terry Chay here: http://terrychay.com/blog/article/considering-an-entry-level-camera.shtml. Whilst nearly two years old, it's still relevant for anyone considering buying a new DSLR - start at "General dSLR buying advice" and read down!
