I rented a 1D Mark III this past weekend for the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat races. I take photos for a team every year. This year the lure of the 10fps got me. What a nice camera. I always thought that I would never really have a use for the pro-level cameras, but the 1D Mark III really has me wanting to save my pennies.

One of the most noticeable differences for me was the size of the viewfinder. Not only is the image window big and bright, the surrounding info is very easy to see, even with glasses. I could just put the camera to my eye and I could see all the readouts. Wow, what a difference that makes. It’s also great that they have the available photos in burst shown. When I was holding the shutter down, I could easily tell when I needed to back off to keep the queue from totally filling.

Being able to put in a CF and an SD card was really nice, too. And they made it flexible in how the second card is used: (there’s like 4 modes, but I remember:) simultaneous write, sequential write, and auto. I believe auto was based on which card is available.

Scott……… glad you are loving the MK3 - I love it too….. can’t put the damn thing down these days. I see you’re trying HDR too, and with the higher dynamic range of the MK3 and up to 7 bracketed shots, you really can’t go wrong………. keep it up mate……….

Sounds like you are loving the 1D Mark III (Marky). I’m glad to hear that. I’m currently reviewing the 1Ds Mark III myself.

Regarding shooting HDRs with Marky, try shooting 5 bracketed shots at +/- 2EV … this will give you a total dynamic range of aprox. 14EV, very similar to the human eye. My HDRs have gotten 1000% better since switching from 3 bracketed shots at +/- 1EV or 2EV to 5 shots at +/- 2EV.

The menu item for number of bracketed exposures is Custom Function 1-6, option #2.

BTW, I totally agree with your comments about the straps that come with these high end cameras … I’m hauling around the $8000.00 1Ds Mk III with the same crap strap and it scares the hell out of me.

I can also confirm the stop-after-2-minutes problem in both iTunes and on my iPod Nano, though it didn’t manage to crash either. I’d re-encode and re-upload.

I am having the same problem, the mp3 plays fine on computer but locks up my ipod. I have to totally restart it. I would like to get all the people that hacked your site, line them up against a wall and beat them with a pillowcase full of D size batteries. Btw, love your podcast.

Boy, I’m having a hard time getting this podcast. I can download it to my PC and it seems to play there just fine. However, on my iPod, it stops after 2 minutes and locks up the iPod. Now I can’t get the subscription in iTunes to update. I am assuming this is related to the hacks on your site. Bleep those people, that’s for sure!
