The Digital Photography Show #90: The Triumphant Return of The Digital Photography Show

The Digital Photography Show #90: The Triumphant Return of The Digital Photography Show!

May 25, 2008 : After more delays than a US Airways flight, Michael and I are back with another episode of The Digital Photography Show. We hope!

I won’t go into too many notes here, as I’m anxious to see if the show posts. And sorry that the audio isn’t quite perfect yet - I’m still getting used to my new Mac.

Here’s some links we talk about on the show:

My new photography blog: Please be sure to check here if the show goes wonky again, or if you want to read about the latest photo news, great deals on equipment and software and my photographic journey: ScottsPhotoBlog.com

Michael’s latest pictures: You can see the shoot Michael describes on the show, as well as many of his other outstanding shots, on his Phanfare site. Be sure to check out his “I’ve Been Published!” album.

My first novel: I’ve been published too! The release of my first novel, First You Fall, is absolutely one of the highlights of my life. You can check it out here. It’s a funny, sexy mystery - not for the kids, but I don’t let them touch my cameras, either. If you pick up the book, drop me a line - you can click the email link on my personal blog.

HDR Software: Michael and I are both users of Photomatix Pro. On todays show, he also recommends you try out Bracketeer.

Listening to The Digital Photography Show can make you money: Congratulations to our wonderful Queen of All Contests, Laurel Housden, and our loyal listener Denise. They are both beginning to make some green off of what previously had been a hobby - and they were nice enough to give us a little credit for the inspiration. Take a look at Laurel’s stunning shots on her blog, and you can see Denise’s amazing iStockPhoto catalog here. We’re so proud we could bust!

If you just click here to Subscribe to TPN :: The Digital Photography Show by Emailyou’ll get the weekly posts announcing each new show in you email. How cool is that? You’ll also be letting us know how many of you care enough to take the time to subscribe, which will put big dumb smiles on our faces. Isn’t that reason enough to sign up?

We’d love to hear what you thought of the show either here on the blog or at TheDigitalPhotographyShow@gmail.com.

Wanna participate in the show?

It’s good to be back, baby.

Woo hoo! Back in business! Welcome back, guys!

  2. Joe Says:

I just loaded iTunes and wonder of wonders — your show started downloading. I won’t uncross my fingers until I can listen all the way through, though!

  3. Anthony Says:

Sorry guys but your show is’nt comming through over here!!
The link directs to your show nr 87!!

greatings from Rotterdam, the netherlands (europe)

  4. Jason Says:

Welcome back! My morning commute will no longer be a boring silence! Congrats on cleaning out the nasties and getting things back running!

  5. Jason Says:

Just a heads up - the streaming audio is the current podcast, but the download off the site is an old one, dated 3/18/08 (#87). After the problems with the iTunes feed, I had deleted the show there waiting until the bugs got worked out to add it back. I went back on today to add it back after seeing the latest post, but it’s not showing up in iTunes for me. I did listen to the flash version though and Scott sounds like he’s got a bit of an echo (if you’re recording on a Mac - there’s a podcast option to record in Garage Band - cleans that echo up very nicely.

  6. Scott Says:

Thanks, all. I hope the problems are worked out. The show appeared in my iTunes an hour or two after I uploaded it - always a good sign.

To be honest, I don’t think the show is our shining effort - and I hate the echo on my end - but the important thing is that we got it done. We have to get back into the swing of things, and all your supportive efforts really help us be motivated to keep going.

Jason, I am recording in GB - where is that option? I need it - or, I need to stop recording the show in the Grand Canyon. Hellooo-ohhhh-ohh…..

  7. Stefan Says:

    Great to have you back!

Note that there are two different downloads on the blog entry; Incorrectly at the beginning show #87, but luckily the one at the end is the correct #90 show.

    Keep ‘em coming! :-)

  8. Landya Says:

I have Laurel’s RSS blog feed in my News Reader. (Scott: NetNewsWire is great and free for the Mac!) Laurel’s photography has really gone from nice to stunning in a manner of 6 months. I have meant to comment on her blog, but, oh well, I will say it here:

YOU SHOULD ALL SUBSCRIBE TO HER PHOTO BLOG. I AM TEMPTED TO BUY THE NIK COLOR EFFECTS JUST BECAUSE I KNOW SHE USES THEM, AND, YOU SHOULD SEE HER PHOTOS.

    Here is her link: http://thephotoenthusiast.com/archives/575

  9. Tim Says:

Hey, worked like a champ. Huzzah!

Scott, if you listen to some of the earlier episodes Michael’s audio always sounded a little off. Now that you’re using a Mac, where he’s an expert, suddenly he sounds great and *you* sound a bit off. Merely a coincidence, I’m sure . . .

    :-)

  10. Sue Says:

By the way, welcome to the Apple side of the street!

  11. Michael Cortina Says:

    1. On my iPod show #90 stopped at the 16 minute mark.
    2. Listened to the entire show On my computer.
    3. The show sounded like S-H-I-T (Scott’s end).
    4. IT’S GREAT TO HAVE YOU BACK!!!
    5. Oh, and a new 24″ iMac Scott-YOU SOB. You’re not worthy….
    6. I said you weren’t worthy of a free Mac either.

F.Y.I. I have since been able to download the full version on my iPod. I don’t know was my end or your end. In case your monitoring comments.

  12. Charlottesville Says:

My update of iTunes still doesn’t show the latest episode of the podcast, yet I am only a few hours from Scott who can see it on iTunes.
Can’t figure iTunes out, but I am thrilled to know you are back.
Don’t even care how you sound, it will just be fun to visit with some genial friends who love cameras as much as the rest of us.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We know it took a huge effort.

  13. Alfredo Pierantoni Says:

hey guys!!! glad you’re back!! just finished to listen episode #90, i’m one of those who turned pro (or at least i think so, jejejej), i’m a graphic designer, had a recording studio for last 5 years, start with photography last year (just to spend some time outside the studio), and know i sold my recording studio, and i’m a full time photographer!!!, doing nothing but that, i’m making corporate photography for the largest malls owners in Venezuela, and doing concert photography for some local bands, thanks for your show!!!!, you can visit mi site, http://www.alfredopierantoni.com

    Alfredo Pierantoni, from Caracas, Venezuela

  14. Michael Says:

Just a couple bits about episode 90 production. Scott recorded directly into GarageBand. I think we need to work on his mic setup. The echo seemed to be from his room environment. I recorded directly into my digital recorder. I have been doing this for a couple of reasons, but once I get some new HW to interface my mic to USB input, I will probably also record through GarageBand. There is a part of my that is uneasy about having a computer do it instead of a dedicated device. Buy hey, I’ll give it a try.

I was pressed for time to turn this around and I normally would have tried to do something about the echo. I apologize for not doing that. I’m just happy we got an episode out there and we’ll get these kinks worked out and sound better than ever.

    –Michael

  15. Laurel Says:

    Hey!!!!

It’s so good to have everyone back. I am dying to get going on another photo contest so Michael and Scott - start thinking about a theme! A special shout out to Landya - thank you so much for the thoughtful comments..you just made my day. And yes…I do use Nik Color Efex Pro - the tonal contrast is my secret weapon!

    Cheers,
    Laurel

  16. Cameron Says:

Folks, there were a couple of problems with the show in the feed, basically S & M getting used to the new set-up on the blog. I’ve cleaned it up and hopefully those of you who got the old show #87 should now get only #90.

  17. Jason Says:

When you first open GB, there should be a couple options - New Music Project, , Open Existing, Create Podcast Episode, and Magic Garage band:

    1. Select the podcast option.
    2. now, highlight the male voice track, begin recording…finish recording.
    3. Delete extraneous tracks or add snippets as needed in front of and behind recorded voice.
    4. Export to mp3
    5. Upload to web
    6. You’re done.

I’ve included a little snippet of what this sounds like - visit this link: http://www.canonblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/test/tdps_sample.mp3

  18. Ron Says:

Glad you are back guys although Scott sounded like he was sitting about 30 feet away from his mike.

I like the sound of Bracketeer but when I went to their website I found it was Mac only. Now I don’t want to sound picky but if both of you guys are now using Macs are us Windows users going to be deprived of pointers to useful applications?

  19. Rob Libby Says:

Hi guys, After I heard about your show from Michael’s wife I have been going back and listening to your old ones. Great stuff. I have found products, software and web pages with great information. I look forward to hear your next show.
I am also interested in hear how Scott likes his MAC for photography work. I am looking at getting a new computer and am thinking about switching to MAC. So please included updates on how you like or dislike the new machine.
    Thank you.

    Rob

  20. Bruce Taylor Says:

It so good to have you guys back podcasting. Thanks for all the hard work, can’t wait for the next show.

  21. Scott Says:

Thanks for the feedback and advice, everyone.

Sorry again for the the echo - but given everything else we’ve overcome to get the show back on the air, I’m glad that’s our biggest problem.

It’s so cool to be back!

  22. Pewari Says:

    YES! You’re back!

Oh thank goodness. I’d subscribed to a couple of photography podcasts to fill the gap, but they are pale imitations and just didn’t have the same compelling “must listen to this RIGHT NOW” feeling that yours does when it hits iTunes :)

Unsubscribing to these other phonies and keeping my fingers crossed that all your problems are history now.

  23. Arthur Says:

Hey guys-loved the show-welcome back! The whole photography world seems to have changed since you were last on. As it always seems to do whenever there is a hiatus.

Scott, I thought you may like to read the following. I think one of your listeners had commented a while ago on her preference towards Olympus? Or, was it Pentax? Seems there is definitely gender preference towards certain brands-

  24. Paul Says:

It’s like ambrosia having the show back. Even though Scott’s voice is off, it’s still fan-friking-tastic having it back. Can’t wait for the next show! Really, thank you both for your efforts.

  25. Joe Says:

Guys, I listened all the way through Ep 90 today on my way home from work. The podcast played through just fine. On my version, not only did Scott have an echo, his level was much lower than Michael’s. I’m sure you guys will get all the technical things ironed out; like us, I’m sure you’re just glad to be back.

Substantively — Michael, you mentioned the Nikon (Nikkor???) lenses you were using. I’d still love to hear you guys do at least a segment on lenses. Why you use a particular lens in a particular situation, that sort of thing. How ’bout it?

  26. MaryG Says:

    Guys…glad you’re finally back…great show!

Scott…congrats on the new book…just finished reading it and loved it…looking forward to the next one. Recommend to anyone who wants a good mystery which is “laugh out loud” funny throughout.

  27. Leslie Says:

Welcome back Scott and Michael! You have been missed.

  28. Marcy Says:

Missed you guy! Glad to have you back…I was listening on my ipod while out walking and didn’t notice an echo but I am deaf in one ear:-) Great stuff and looking forward to more to come.

  29. Michael Cortina Says:

So you finally got a show out - fantastic. So when is show #91 - first week in July maybe?

I forgot, Scott is on the road with his publisher autographing his new book for all his fans. No time for podcasts! Go ahead Scott, follow your dream Mr. Novelist. When will you be passing through my city???

  30. Caledonia Says:

Great to hear that you are back.

Scott - I wondered if your audio problems were due to you recording through the iMac’s internal microphone rather than the external - that is what it sounded like - did you tell Garageband to use your external mic only in its preference?

  31. Rafael Says:

Hello from Poland, even here you guys have fans of your show. Glad you’ve made through ale the inconveniences and you’re back again! although I am still listening to the archive shows and I enjoy every one of them. Very soon my own website will be running so I invite you all to take a look already :)
    take care!

  32. Jack Says:

Welcome Back! I just wanted to post this about a bill that working it’s way through Congress. I first heard about it on The Focus Ring podcast. Not knowing anything about it I did a little research and also listened to The Photo Talk Radio podcast. They had a guest that had a lot of info about the bill and what can be done. I think all photographers should look into this. Here is the link to their show and it also makes it very easy to contact your Congressman and Senators,(it even has a letter written that you can just put your name to if you want). http://www.phototalkradio.com/ptr080524.html, Thanks for the soapbox. Scott and Michael, can’t wait for the next show.

  33. Cheri Says:

It’s great to have you back I missed you! Congrats on the book and the magazine shoot!

  34. Michael Cortina Says:

Hello - show # 91? If you were employees you would be fired. I guess in the true spirit of podcasting is you can do or say whatever you want whenever you want. You had some issues and your audience waits patiently. Waits and waits and waits and waits and waits and waits. No one expects your show to be perfect - never have! Just regular. So you are back…LET’S GO!

  35. Harve Says:

Listened to the new episode on the commute home tonight, great to have you back! Have to agree we don’t expect the show to be perfect, Just like Coca Cola, you’re the real thing! Keep up the great work and thanks for all that you do.

    -Harve-

  36. Jason Says:

    Hey Jack,

neat info at that link there about the Orphan Works Act that’s going through Congress. Right now it’s still in the Judiciary subcommittee, and there is definitely a concerted effort at getting the semantics changed to protect artists and their work. You may also want to check out this site: http://www.defendyourart.com

  37. Saila Says:

Did you guys lose all your sponsors already? No mention of them were made in the show

  38. Ron Says:

Glad you guys are back, you have been missed.

  39. Rosanne (shrewspeaks) Says:

HEY! So Glad to have you two back up and running. And BOTH published in the meantime! Congrats!

You started the show off with people are starting to make money…well, add me into the mix. In the last three weeks, I have been given three commercial assignments to take lifestyle portraits for business websites.

It all started from taking some of my Flickr photos and making MOO mini-cards…and handing them out like calling cards to people I work with.

Now, I just have to keep the momentum going. JUST like you two…keep these shows coming!
