The Digital Photography Show #93: Face to Face with Rick Sammon

July 17, 2008 : Today’s show features an interview with long-time friend of the The Digital Photography Show, Rick Sammon.

Rick’s new book, Face to Face, focuses on taking better portraits, or, as its subtitle reads, it’s “Rick Sammon’s Complete Guide to Photographing People.”

RIck gives many great tips on today’s show, including

• How to transform your garage into an inexpensive photo studio
• How to properly calibrate your external flash to use as a “fill light”
• The importance of establishing rapport with your models
• How to not just take - but make - your shots

Rick also talks about his newest venture - online training over at KelbyTraining.com.

For those of you who enjoy the banter between Michael and I - sorry, today’s show is banterless. We were in the middle of recording when my Mac decided not to work anymore. Turns out there is an issue with the latest build of Leopard and USB audio devices such as my Blue Snowball (you can read about it here). Since I just gave up Windows because of exactly this kind of problem, I’m a little bitter about this, Steve Jobs.

I did buy a new Firewire mixer though, so, assuming the next build of Leopard doesn’t fry that, we should have a return to banter on the next episode.
